Christian Eriksen’s contract beef, with his prior terms due to expire in 2018, has been going on for some time. Indeed, according to reports from London Evening Standard in July, Spurs have been trying to tie the Danish international down to a new deal for well over a year, only for him to reject their advances.

LES described the attacking midfielder’s contract situation as a ‘top priority’ for chairman Daniel Levy and it appears they were right; with summer transfer business now out of the way, the Lilywhites have wasted no time in agreeing a new contract with Eriksen until 2020.

Well, LES suggest Tottenham wanted to tie Eriksen down at White Hart Lane a lot sooner. But with the summer transfer window now closed, there’s been much less stopping the 24-year-old from putting pen to paper. Perhaps he was simply waiting in case a last-minute move to Real Madrid or Bayern Munich materialised. At the same time, if Spurs had let the former Ajax star’s deal run down any further, they would have struggled to turn down bids in January and next summer.

Eriksen may not be held in the same esteem as Dele Alli and Harry Kane after their title-chasing escapades last season, but 23 goals and 23 assists in 104 Premier League appearances from midfield pretty much speaks for itself.

Eriksen’s abilities are a little more temperamental but at his best, the Danish star is undoubtedly one of the top No.10s in the Premier League – as the stats below both demonstrate:

Below is a quick look at how he compared to Spurs’ other attacking midfield options last season, courtesy of Squawka. As you can see, he actually proved more effective than Alli in terms of chances created and assists:
