Darren Sproles, Eagles agree on contract extension

Sproles is here to stay.

The Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to terms with Darren Sproles on a one-year contract extension, according to an official announcement from the team. Sproles was set to be a free agent after the 2016 season, but now his deal runs through 2017. The extension is reportedly worth $4.5 million. Ian Rapoport notes that the Eagles moved some more money into 2016 with this extension.

Sproles, who turned 33 in June, skipped all of Philadelphia's voluntary offseason workouts earlier this offseason. It was reported Sproles was seeking a long-term deal, but he denied that report. Now it's clear there was at least some truth to Sproles wanting a new contract.

Despite his age, the veteran Eagles running back is one of the team's most talented players. Sproles has been one of the NFL's best -- if not the best -- punt returner over the past few seasons.

Sproles is coming off one of his worst seasons in terms of yards per reception and yards per rush attempt, but he's still a key member of the Eagles' sketchy stable of running backs. Presumed starter Ryan Mathews has already suffered an injury prior to the start of training camp. There's a realistic chance he'll be gone after this season. The only other running back guaranteed to make the 53-man roster this season is fifth round rookie Wendell Smallwood.

Sproles has looked fast as ever during practices this offseason. Eagles head coach Doug Pederson says the team plans to use the veteran in an "extensive role" this year. Sproles won't be used as a full-time starter, but he figures to be a meaningful contributor on offense.
