Safety dance.

The Philadelphia Eagles announced some more roster news on Monday. The team officially signed free agent safety Blake Countess and waived/injured safety Obi Melifonwu.

Countess, 27, is back for his fourth stint in Philly. The Eagles originally selected him in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft but he didn’t play a regular season snap with the Birds until Week 17 last season. Countess was signed to a futures contract shortly after the 2020 campaign but was then released in early March.

In addition to having experience with the Eagles, Countess also has familiarity with Philadelphia defensive backs coach Dennard Wilson. The two overlapped on the New York Jets a couple of years ago.

The Eagles are likely signing Countess to help them fill reps in training camp and preseason games. He’s a long shot to make the roster.

As for Melifonwu, his time with the Eagles was short-lived. Philly signed him a little over two weeks ago but the former second-round pick failed to show much in practice and recently suffered an injury. Assuming he goes unclaimed, he’ll revert to the Eagles’ injured reserve list and they’ll likely release him from there at some point.
