2021 NFL Mock Draft: Indianapolis Colts choose help for Carson Wentz

With the 21st overall pick in the 2021 Bleeding Green Nation community mock draft, Indianapolis Colts GM Fly Like An Eagle selects ...

Christian Darrisaw, OT, Virginia Tech

To be clear, I got this pick as the alternate. But any chance to reunite with my boy Carson Wentz is a dream come true. All of you should know by now how much I supported him while he was here, and was devastated to see him go. Well ... it’s time to give him one last hoorah before we start the 2021 season. Here’s to you, Carson!

The Need

If you were like me, you know that the REAL reason Carson Wentz struggled last year was because of the inconsistency of the Eagles’ offensive line. The poor guy was sacked 253 times. I’d argue that every sack and every interception was due to him running for his life. Otherwise, we all know he’s the front runner to the 2017 MVP race caliber player if he could just get some decent protection.

It’s a new day, and Carson Wentz has moved west to Indianapolis. Indy’s offensive line actually performed pretty well in 2020. They were ranked the 7th best offensive line by PFF.

But ... Indy suffered a crushing loss to its top-tier offensive line with left tackle Anthony Castonzo‘s retirement. He had been the eighth-highest-graded left tackle in pass protection over the past three seasons. Bye-bye bodyguard.

The Fit

So … we don’t want Carson having another miserable season, otherwise those nasty Eagles fans will get their wish of a really high 1st round pick out of us. So … all we gotta do to get him back to MVP form, is protect him. Luckily there’s a monster still left in the draft for us in Christian Darrisaw.

Look regardless of how you feel about my favorite non-Eagle Carson, the Colts need a tackle, and this kid is a beast.

He’s a three-year starter at the left tackle position. So he’s not a project like other tackles that are projected as possible guards. He’s exactly what the Colts need, and you would expect him to start his rookie season, which is what you want out of your first-round draft picks. (Howie, take note.)

Pass Protection

He’s the definition of a bodyguard. In 2020, on 293 pass-blocking snaps, he allowed no sacks, no hits, and just six hurries.

Run Blocking

What running back wouldn’t want to have this guy in front of him. In 2020, runners who went to Darrisaw’s gap gained 7.7 yards per carry and 3.2 yards before contact.

In summary, Darrisaw is an excellent fit for a position of need and is a steal this late in the first round. If I’m in need of a left tackle which the colts are, this is the guy I want. He’s got the size, the experience, and the stats to make you feel comfortable writing his name down on that card on draft day.

Now that Carson Wentz has all the protection he needs, with plenty of weapons, coached by the REAL genius behind the 2019 super bowl, we should all expect Wentz to finally be crowned the legitimate NFL MVP for 2021 without an asterisk or almost attached to it. From your biggest fan Carson: Here’s to 75% successful snaps this year, and a 2-15 record!! Or at least 70% and a one-and-done playoff game. But either way, good luck!!
