How committed are the Eagles to fixing Carson Wentz? Not as committed as you may think, says Joe Banner - Inquirer
I actually think this is neutral or more likely to mean Carson isn’t coming back. I know everybody else is saying the opposite. But Sirianni isn’t a guy that has some broad track record of developing quarterbacks or creating schemes that are really intricate. So it’s not like they would have any great confidence that he’s going to come in and make Carson look like the quarterback he was in 2017. It could be neutral. They could be where they were before they started the search where they wanted to try and fix Carson but also were willing to consider the possibility of trading him and moving forward with Jalen Hurts. Or it could be, they don’t want to bring in a new coach who doesn’t have a ton of experience and start with him having to figure out who gets what reps in practice, and who in the locker room favors this guy over that guy. This situation presents a lot of challenges to a new coach coming in. As we discussed last week, it’s one of the reasons they had trouble attracting some top candidates.

Wentz’s work ethic shouldn’t be doubted. But it’s unclear if he’s working in the right way to fix what needs to change. Based on his actions, it doesn’t seem like he truly realizes how much he was to blame for his own struggles in 2020. He reportedly made excuses for his mistakes. Instead of being humbled by his benching, he reportedly complained to Howie Roseman and Jeffrey Lurie. He seemingly had his camp leak trade requests and, at the very least, he did nothing to distance himself from those reports. The Eagles hiring Sirianni is a little concerning in that Josh McDaniels and Duce Staley might’ve been passed over in part for how they’re perceived to implement hard coaching. It feels like Wentz, who has wielded too much power and influence thus far, might’ve gotten his way yet again considering how he likes Reich and the Eagles hired the next closest thing to their former offensive coordinator. It’s been said that Sirianni has an edge to him, or at least more-so than Doug Pederson. Hopefully that’s true and hopefully Wentz embraces tougher coaching.

Maybe the team still believes in Wentz. Eh. It’s probably more like they know they’re stuck with him. The bet here is that they called around the league to gauge interest in him, and came away disappointed in the response. And so, the head coaching search centered around candidates that had a plan to fix him in the event they can’t move him for what they would deem to be adequate compensation.

Randy Mueller — a former GM with the New Orleans Saints and Miami Dolphins, who was the Chargers’ senior executive of football operations at the time — said Rivers, Williams and Allen succeeded because of Sirianni’s dedication. “If you know Nick, you know his attention to detail,” Mueller said Thursday. “Players develop when they know what they’re doing. His players always know what they are doing, so they have a chance. He can communicate and teach (his methods) to where they are confident enough in what they are doing, so they can develop as players. That, to me, is coaching.” Sirianni has worked under five NFL head coaches: Haley, Crennel, McCoy, Lynn and Reich. Mueller believes each of those systems will help Sirianni build his own program.

Fran Sirianni is a coaching legend in upstate New York and a member of the Chautauqua (County) Hall of Fame for his incredible career as a head coach at Southwestern. The boys grew up in a football household and there was always competition. But Nick was younger than Jay by 6 years and Mike by 9, so he bore the brunt of the physical competition. “We used to beat the crap out of him when he was younger,” Mike said.

No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. The Giants are not going to, and should not, trade for DeShaun Watson. Bob, you might be ecstatic with your proposed deal of most of the franchise for Watson. I’m not. I know how good Watson is. But, you basically want to give up half the roster to get the guy. Who is he going to hand the ball to? Throw it to? Who is going to block? It sounds to me like your idea is just keep adding names to the mix until the Texans say yes.

Chris Russell and crew at Washington Football on SI.com have been all over the various front office moves, and now he is reporting that Smith is going to be leaving the organization. One of his sources described the departure as inevitable. We don’t know if Smith will around until the draft which can happen with second-level execs in a front office in transition. Smith has hired an agent, and is likely preparing for his first taste of NFL free agency. Russell says there are other teams looking into Smith if he becomes available. John Keim speculated on his latest podcast that the 49ers or Rams could be interested due to his connections to Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay. Keim also said that Smith was tainted by his association with Bruce Allen and the old regime. Experience and a limited resume at the top executive level was something that was mentioned by multiple sources.

The final four teams in the 2020 NFL season are set, with the Packers, Buccaneers, Bills and Chiefs forming the final group nobody a year ago would have expected. Well, outside of the Chiefs. I think everyone outside of Kansas City is a little bummed we’re not getting a Browns vs. Bills AFC Championship, but honestly, it’s for the best. It would have really taken the wind out of the end of the season to see both the Bills and Browns benefit from two of the league’s best young quarterbacks being forced out in crunch time due to concussion protocol.
