QB Jalen Hurts: The debate over whether or not to bench Carson Wentz is well-covered ground, but the best argument that I’ve heard in favor of it is that if the Eagles are going to picking in the top 10 of the 2021 NFL Draft (and maybe even the top 5), they have to at least consider the idea of drafting a quarterback, especially in a year in which potentially four of them are worthy of a top 15 pick. And if you’re going to consider taking a quarterback, you should at least get a better idea of what Hurts is as a player while you can, right now. • WR Travis Fulgham: I can’t believe I even have to type this, but there should never be a situation in which Alshon Jeffery is ever on the field and Fulgham is not. Jeffery is clearly cooked, and even if he weren’t, there’s a near 0 percent chance he’ll be on the roster in 2021. Jeffery’s appearance on the field is perhaps the most nonsensical thing involving the Eagles this season, in a season full of them.

Carson Wentz is a broken quarterback- BGN
Fifty-three different quarterbacks have finished a season this poorly, but only 6 of them were able to do it a second time, and 0 have done it three times. Carson is legitimately playing at a sub-NFL level, historically to the point that quarterbacks who have played this bad didn’t get many more chances. Jalen Hurts deserves to start a couple of games, and I’m officially calling for Carson to be benched ... again.

No one understands why Pederson continues to play Alshon Jeffery, especially when it means fewer snaps for Travis Fulgham. I don’t get that at all. Jeffery is a glaring example of what has been wrong with the Eagles for the past two years. Signed to a pointless extension, kept on the roster while hurt, forced back into the lineup when the team has young receivers who need reps. I think that falls under the heading of a conspiracy of dunces. Ugh.

I think you keep Pederson around for next year, because you have to keep Wentz around. You just have to, thanks to that massive extension in 2019. Cutting him after this season would put $59 million in dead money on the salary cap. You can not do that; not in a year where the salary cap is projected to go down. Even designating him as a post-June 1 cut is not feasible; that puts $35 million in dead money on the 2021 cap and $25 million on the 2022 cap. Even a trade would put over $30 million on the cap, and no one’s trading for Wentz at the moment. Wentz is in spitting distance of having the worst DYAR season we’ve ever recorded. He’s at -829 DYAR at this point; the all-time record is -1,145 by Josh Rosen in 2018. If you prefer old-school stats, Wentz is one of six quarterbacks in NFL history to see his passer rating drop by 24 points over his average of the previous three seasons, per NFL Research. Four of the previous five quarterbacks retired, and the fifth, Mark Rypien, was done as a starter. This is a disaster.

This much I know: Wentz appears to be a broken player. In fact, one scouting director who defended the quarterback to me earlier in the season circled back via text on Tuesday morning with this, “Man, I was wrong on Wentz. He looks completely shot.” Philly’s married to him contractually for at least one more year, and probably two. It’s incumbent on the Eagles to do all they can to try to get him right.

Howie Roseman hasn’t just failed his head coach and franchise QB by saddling them with unreliable lineups. He’s also put the Eagles in one of the worst salary-cap positions of 2021. (A nice parting gift for the new GM!) There’s reason to believe Lurie may gift Howie yet another chance at redemption, but if one piece of the Eagles’ Big Three must go, it should probably be the one most responsible for building the team. And that’s with or without a December miracle from either Pederson or Wentz.

Eagles players will wear custom designed cleats this weekend as part of the NFL’s My Cause My Cleats campaign to raise money for charities close to their heart. Brandon Graham, Vinny Curry, Miles Sanders and numerous other Eagles players selected charities meaningful to them to support, many of them either here in Philadelphia or in their hometowns, and worked with artists to design cleats that represent those charities and causes. Graham’s cleats support the Detroit Police Athletic League, Curry picked Big Brothers / Big Sisters and Sanders the Pittsburgh Boys and Girls Club’ program to end gun violence.

Some bonus good news came when the Broncos claimed former Denver safety Will Parks off waivers after the Philadelphia Eagles placed him there on Tuesday. Parks, a fifth-year player selected by the Broncos in the sixth round of the 2016 draft, spent the first four seasons of his career with Denver before signing with Philadelphia this offseason. He was injured for the beginning of 2020 and saw action in only six games. But any Broncos’ fan prior to this year will remember Parks for his jack-of-all-trades role he played in Vic Fangio’s defense last year.

Colt McCoy received “the majority” of first-team practice reps at quarterback for the New York Giants on Wednesday as they prepared for the possibility of facing the Seattle Seahawks without starting quarterback Daniel Jones. Jones left Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals with a hamstring injury. Coach Joe Judge said the Giants were going to “see what he’s able to do” during Wednesday’s practice before making any plans for the remainder of the week. Before practice, Judge sounded as though he intended to be careful with Jones.
