New additions on the horizon?

The Philadelphia Eagles are set to host free agent visits with defensive tackle Anthony Rush and linebacker Rashad Smith, according to the NFL’s official transaction wire.

ANTHONY RUSH

Rush’s name should sound familiar because the Eagles originally signed him as an undrafted rookie free agent following the 2019 NFL Draft. They waived him to make room for Orlando Scandrick (yikes) on their roster during training camp last year before getting him back by signing him away from the Raiders’ Practice Squad. Rush ultimately appeared in nine games with Philly in 2019.

Rush had a chance to make the Eagles’ 2020 roster but got caught up in a numbers crunch at defensive tackle. He joined the Seattle Seahawks, where he remained until they waived him earlier this week. Rush has recently been dealing with a injury that’s caused him to miss playing time.

With the Eagles losing Hassan Ridgeway for the season, they could be looking to add Rush back to their roster or practice squad in order to have more interior defensive line depth.

RASHAD SMITH

Smith originally signed with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted rookie free agent following the 2020 NFL Draft. The Bears brought him back to their practice squad after waiving him in final cuts.

The Dallas Cowboys poached Smith off the Bears’ practice squad in mid-September. He didn’t log a snap with Dallas before they waived him earlier this week.

The Eagles could be looking to add Smith to their practice squad. They might also want to pick his brain about what makes the Cowboys’ defense so good!

I think Smith could be an instant impact player on special teams. He has great speed for his size and is a sure tackler. On standard down and distance formations I would use him as a coverage linebacker, primarily in zone. While he made a ton of tackles, Smith was much better at defending the pass and running with running backs and tight ends. He’s really good at deceiving quarterbacks and reading their eyes to make plays on the ball. Finding a way to coax this out of him should be the goal.
