Disgraceful.

Well, it turns out that uneasy feeling heading into the Philadelphia Eagles’ Week 1 game against the Washington Football Team was justified. The Eagles are seriously 0-1 after blowing a 17 to 0 lead to Washington. Final score: Washington 27, Eagles 17.

Read on for a recap and some instant postgame thoughts.

FIRST HALF

The Eagles got off to a good start on Sunday by forcing Washington to go three-and-out. Malik Jackson, looking good and healthy, came up with a big third down hit on Dwayne Haskins to force an incompletion.

The Eagles then made it a great start with Carson Wentz surgically dealing on a four-play, 62-yard touchdown drive. 12 personnel led the way with both Dallas Goedert and Zach Ertz getting involved.

Wentz continued to stay hot with a big 55-yard completion to rookie Jalen Reagor. Nice to actually have some speed on offense, huh?!

The Eagles’ offensive line issues started to manifest with Wentz taking his fourth sack with over 14 minutes remaining in the second quarter.

Washington finally led a drive into scoring territory but it came to an end with Avonte Maddox dropping a third down pick to bring up a missed field goal from 48 yards out.

Capitalizing on the Football Team’s folly, Wentz dropped another dime to Goedert for another Eagles touchdown to take a three possession lead: 17 to 0. Just a beautiful throw and catch.

The Eagles had an opportunity to build on their lead with under two minutes remaining in the first half but Fabian Moreau intercepted Wentz’s throw for Reagor. The cornerback read the route and jumped the ball on a bad throw.

Philly’s turnover proved costly with Haskins connecting with Logan Thomas for seven points on a coverage bust. Potentially sealing the game turned into giving life back to Washington.

Wentz almost threw another pick and then overthrew an open Reagor down the field for what would’ve been another touchdown. Another deep throw to DeSean Jackson was off target. Not a good finish to an otherwise strong first half for No. 11.

SECOND HALF

The Eagles started the second half with a three-and-out that featured Boston Scott running for 13 yards on 3rd-and-15. The old coward’s draw led to a punt. Not fun to see the offense go cold.

Josh Sweat put a stop to a Washington drive with a third down strip sack while going up against Geron Christian. Made the Football Team left tackle look like Matt Pryor on that play to force a punt.

But the Eagles’ offense would give it right back with Wentz throwing ANOTHER pick on a bad throw meant for John Hightower. Very clear that the starting quarterback and the rookie receivers just weren’t in sync.

Washington was able to capitalize on another short field to bring the Eagles’ lead down to three points.

The Eagles responded by driving into field goal range but Wentz took a big sack on 3rd-and-8 to bring up a 53-yard field goal attempt. And Jake Elliott missed it on target but just short. Wentz refusing to throw the ball away took points off the board. Not smart!

Luckily for Wentz, the defense forced a three-and-out from Washington’s offense. It looked like the Eagles might drive into field goal range but some inaccurate throws from Wentz and Washington’s sixth sack of the day brought up a turnover on downs.

Washington took over and kicked a 38-yard field goal to tie the game with 14:15 remaining. What could’ve been a comfortable victory turned into anyone’s game.

Kerrigan picked up Washington’s seventh sack of the day to set Philly’s offense back. The Eagles ran a screen to lose six more yards. And then Wentz was almost picked off a third time but Darby couldn’t hold on deep down the field.

The Football Team moved to Philly’s 4-yard line and went for it on 4th-and-1 to bring up goal-to-go territory. Peyton Barber punched it in to give Washington their first lead of the day. What an embarrassment.

The Eagles got to a 4th-and-3 after Wentz overthrew an open Jackson along the sideline. Doug Pederson had the offense go for it but a wide open Ertz dropped Wentz’s pass for another turnover on downs. It seems safe to say that won’t help him in contract negotiations.

Washington was able to take over at the Eagles’ 42-yard line and pick up 20 yards before kicking a field goal to go up two possessions. The Football Team took a 10-point lead with 3:25 remaining in the game.

Washington’s eighth sack was a strip-sack on Wentz that was recovered by the Football Team. That was the game.

RAPID REACTION

• What an embarrassing loss. This should’ve been a blowout win for the Birds. Haskins isn’t even any good.
• It was great to see Wentz to get off to such a hot start but he ultimately let Washington back into the game. Offensive line issues obviously did him no favors. But Wentz still could’ve played much better than he did.
• The defense would’ve looked a lot better if the offense didn’t suck so much. Too many short fields for Washington’s offense.
• When will the injuries end? Shit’s getting old, man.
• This division loss could be real costly in late-year tie-breaker scenarios. If that even ends up mattering for the Eagles.
• Needless to say, this loss is real concerning for the Eagles’ 2020 outlook. Still plenty of time to turn things around, sure ... but it could also be that this team just isn’t that great. Which is what some were worried about heading into the season.

INJURIES

• DeSean Jackson didn’t seem to be at 100% in this game.
• Boston Scott had to leave the game early, leaving the Eagles with Corey Clement and Jason Huntley at running back. Scott later returned.
• Jack Driscoll, who got the start at right tackle, had to leave the game late in the third quarter. Jordan Mailata had to come in.
• Vinny Curry left the game with a hamstring injury and didn’t return.
• Brandon Graham suffered a concussion. With Barnett out, the Eagles were down to Genard Avery and Josh Sweat as their only two defensive ends.
