Eagles’ (Worst) Mount Rushmore: Chip Kelly era

We switched it up a bit for this short era in Eagles history.

The last time Bleeding Green Nation took a deep dive into the Eagles’ Mount Rushmore through different eras of the franchise’s history was back in 2013. As a mini-series for Memorial Day weekend, BGN’s Community Manager Justin Goodhart is breaking down his Mount Rushmore from the Chip Kelly era, Doug Pederson era, and revisits the All-Time greats.

We want your input, too! So agree, disagree, and give us your picks in the comments!

When looking back at the Chip Kelly Era, there are more things to complain about than to celebrate. With that in mind, we decided to deviate a little from picking the best players for a Mount Rushmore homage, and instead are interested in the worst players from those few years.

In a less serious tone, choosing the four worst players in the Chip era turned out to be more difficult than I thought. I decided the easiest way to do it would be to include the most infamous faces that he brought to Philadelphia.

  • Bradley Fletcher
  • Kiko Alonso
  • Mark Sanchez
  • DeMarco Murray

Starting off this putrid list, we have Bradley Fletcher. In 2013, when the season ended I don’t think many thought Fletcher was a disgustingly bad cornerback. We only had to wait a year to realize Fletcher was a terrible corner on an already shaky at-best secondary. Watching him get torched by Dez Bryant in that game in Philadelphia on Sunday night will forever be burned into my brain.

You traded the team’s greatest running back… for a guy who is now best known for cheap-shotting Joe Flacco when he was a Dolphin, and the guy that made ONE PLAY in his time in Philly. (Was a cool one handed INT though.)

I will shamefully stick my hand in the air and say I thought we would be okay with Mark Sanchez after Nick Foles went down in 2014. The high point of the Sanchez era was beating the Cowboys on Thanksgiving, the low point was weeks later when he lost, HE LOST, to a 4-12 Redskins team that ended the Eagles season on a dismal Saturday night.

I always blamed Chip for what happened with DeMarco Murray more than I blame Murray. He wasn’t used correctly. Murray hated Philadelphia and no one was sad to see him go in 2016. Crying on a plane to Jeff Lurie, he lost 12 yards on one carry as an Eagle and his famous death stare at Sammy Sleeves basically saying “Why did I let you talk me into this” are my favorite moments.

I think honorable mentions can be: Cary Williams, Pat Chung, Josh Huff, Brad Smith, Julian Vandervelde (was cut and re-signed like 16 times), and a personal favorite of mine… Billy Davis the worst defensive coordinator in Eagles history, save your Juan Castillo comments.
