Report: Jason Peters wants to stay with Eagles - 94WIP
“There’s no rush on Jason Peters’ part and there’s no rush on the Eagles’ part because nobody basically can do anything,” Gunn told Jon Marks and Ike Reese on the 94WIP Marks & Reese Show on Thursday afternoon. “Jason Peters, they know what he is, what he’s capable of doing. From what I’ve been told, Peters turned down offers from elsewhere because he wants to stay with the Eagles. The Eagles want him. You can look at it on the surface and say, well he’s 38 years old. But I will say this, he is that rarity of a guy who is still, at 38 years old, is still one of the best technicians at his position and is still I would argue one of the top 10 players, I think you guys would agree at his position as well. Granted injuries have started to pile up a little more, he’s playing 80-85 percent of the snaps. But I’d rather have Jason Peters 80-85 percent of the time than not have him at all right now.”

Now that the 2020 NFL schedule is officially here, it’s time for a very important and scientific exercise: going through the Philadelphia Eagles’ schedule game-by-game in order to come up with a final record prediction. I can’t help but point out that this exercise feels especially futile given the uncertainty that these games will even be played due to COVID-19. But alas, the content must go on! Last year around this time, I had the Eagles “looking at a floor of 9-7 and a ceiling of 12-4.” I was right about their floor as they ended up winning nine games. This obviously means I’m going to be right again this year, so make sure to really take these predictions to heart.

The Eagles have three defensive ends who will be expected to produce in Graham, Barnett, and Sweat. Thereafter, it’s sort of a mishmash of guys with unclear roles: Genard Avery’s best usage, in our view, would be as a hybrid linebacker / pass rusher. I don’t think he can play DE at his size on normal down-distances, because he’ll be a major liability against the run. And then even in obvious pass rush situations, I don’t think you can line him up on the edge and expect him to get a high percentage of one-on-one wins, because his size will always limit his pass rush repertoire. His explosiveness is pretty clear, but it’ll be a challenge to find ways to get him into games in that rush Joker role, without telegraphing to the offense what’s coming, unless he can develop as a linebacker who can also cover and play the run.

While everyone is closely examining the rookie quarterbacks, I’ll be watching Young bring Carson Wentz to the turf in a vintage Washington performance. Still, it’s a bit presumptuous to think Hurts will become a high-quality backup quarterback just because he’s a second-round pick. There are a wide range of outcomes to consider. Just look at the last four quarterbacks taken in the back-third of the second round. If Hurts develops into what Jimmy Garoppolo (No. 62 overall, 2014) became in New England or Brock Osweiler (No. 57, 2012) became in Denver, that’s terrific contract value for a backup quarterback who provided serviceable on-field production while also netting the team future compensation. (Garoppolo was traded for a second-round pick; Osweiler brought Denver a third-round compensatory pick.) However, consider DeShone Kizer (No. 52, 2017) and Christian Hackenberg (No. 51, 2016), second-round picks drafted in the same range who did little to warrant their selections. Neither quarterback has found a stable NFL home.

Not everything the Cowboys have done this offseason has met with approval. Prescott is still mired in negotiations over his new contract, and has not signed his franchise tag. Deciding to not try and re-sign Bryon Jones will be debated for some time. But the good of this offseason far outweighs the bad. We can’t even resort to the old meme of Jerry Jones as a poor GM, because he has made no egregious missteps this time. If the Cowboys fall short, none of the old excuses will hold much water. Even having a mostly new coaching staff cannot be called on. This one has too much experience and past success for that to fly. Count me as one who doesn’t think we will need to make any excuses this year.

Those games aren’t surprising either. The Giants are a huge market, and the league loves to get them in prime time to start the season whenever possible, and a game against the Steelers is a big draw for Week 1. Likewise, it’s always a highlight when the Giants play the Eagles — granted bad and weird things always seem to happen when these two teams meet (Does anyone know about the cat population in the Lincoln Financial Center?)
