It’s time for a breakdown of the snap counts from the Philadelphia Eagles’ 17 to 10 loss to the New England Patriots in Week 11 of the 2019 NFL season.
OFFENSE
- Ah, the moment you’ve all been waiting for! Let’s look at how Eagles wide receivers are “producing” over the last seven games:
Nelson Agholor: 430 Snaps, 18 recs, 154 yards (8.6 avg), 0 TD, 1 fumble
Alshon Jeffery: 352 snaps, 29 recs, 304 yards (10.5 avg), 2 TD
Mack Hollins: 237 snaps, 1 rec, 13 yards, 0 TD
Jordan Matthews: 64 snaps, 1 rec, 6 yards, 0 TD*
JJ Arcega-Whiteside: 63 snaps, 1 rec, 29 yards, 0 TD
DeSean Jackson: 4 snaps, 1 rec, 5 yards, 0 TD*
Agholor continues to be an abject disaster. He dropped another potential game-winning (or at least game-tying) touchdown pass. He’s the 26th highest paid wide receiver in terms of annual value this year. It’s insane to be paying that to a guy who’s averaging 22 yards per game over the past seven games.
Jeffery obviously didn’t play against the Pats.
Hollins’ offensive playing time took a big hit. He did actually run a nice route to get open at one point but Carson Wentz just missed him.
JMatt’s sole reception was a hollow six-yard gain on 3rd-and-10. He wasn’t able to make any contested catches. JMatt saw more playing time in one game than JJAW has over the past seven games combined.
JJAW actually made a nice catch on an out of structure throw by Wentz.
Jackson’s out for the season.
Okay, now that my receiver bit is out of the way, let’s get back to the rest of the offense.
- Jason Peters only missed three snaps in his first game back from injury. He had two penalties that set the offense back on the Eagles’ first two drives. Not great.
- Zach Ertz played the most of any skill player. He caught nine of his 11 targets for 94 yards. He’s the only regularly reliable pass catcher on the entire team.
- Miles Sanders predictably saw a bulk of the team’s running back snaps with Jordan Howard out. Despite this, Sanders only had 11 carries for 38 yards and two receptions for nine yards. The Eagles have previously relied on Sanders making big plays in the passing game but that didn’t happen against New England. I’m sure Bill Belichick was focused on taking that away considering it’s the Eagles’ best shot at an explosive play.
- Dallas Goedert played a lot but only had three receptions for 36 yards. He did have the Eagles’ only touchdown but he also had at least one drop. He had another drop late in the game that turned into an interception before a penalty fortunately wiped it out. Goedert’s not really dominating like this team needs him to.
- Halapoulivaati Vaitai got the nod at right tackle after Lane Johnson was carted off with a concussion. The Eagles were up 10-0 when Johnson got hurt. The offense couldn’t do much without him.
- Boston Scott’s seven carries went for 26 yards. He also accounted for the Eagles’ longest play of the day by drawing a 49-yard pass interference penalty.
DEFENSE
- Malcolm Jenkins still hasn’t missed a single defensive snap this season.
- Nathan Gerry got hurt at one point but only missed one snap.
- The secondary has stabilized with Jalen Mills and Ronald Darby returning to the starting lineup. They’re not star corners by any means but they’re definitely significant upgrades on Rasul Douglas and Sidney Jones.
- Fletcher Cox had one tackle and one quarterback hit on 66 snaps played. Need more impact than that from a star player.
- The Patriots were clearly picking on Avonte Maddox. He gave up some plays but he did have a near-pick on a downfield throw meant for Julian Edelman.
- Kamu Grugier-Hill had himself a game against his former team with three tackles for loss. He also almost came up with an interception on a tipped ball. Grugier-Hill was having a great camp before getting hurt. Looks like he might finally be getting over the injury.
- Josh Sweat didn’t log a stat.
- Rasul Douglas was the fourth cornerback when the Eagles used dime packages.
- Rudy Ford getting some defensive playing time is new. He’s now the No. 3 safety with Andrew Sendejo gone.
- After logging three defensive snaps in his Week 9 Eagles debut, trade acquisition Genard Avery saw a slightly bigger role against the Pats. He was still fifth in the defensive end rotation.
SPECIAL TEAMS
- The aforementioned Rudy Ford had ANOTHER special teams penalty. He’s up to four this year. Not great.
- Craig James made multiple special teams tackles in this game. He looked good.
- Marcus Epps only played on special teams in his Eagles debut.
- Sidney Jones only played because the Eagles had injured players take up three of their seven inactive spots. He figures to be a healthy scratch again in the near future. Bust.
DID NOT PLAY
INACTIVE: Jordan Howard, Alshon Jeffery, Nigel Bradham, Nate Sudfeld, Daeshon Hall, Shareef Miller, Nate Herbig
ACTIVE: Josh McCown, Jay Ajayi
- It shouldn’t be surprising that Ajayi didn’t get any playing time. He hasn’t taken a single practice rep since tearing his ACL in October last year. The Eagles only kept the Jay Train active for an emergency situation. He’s wearing the No. 28 jersey now, by the way. He was previously No. 26 in 2018 and No. 36 in 2017.
