For the first time since their meeting in Super Bowl 52, the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles will go up against each other later this week. A lot has happened for the Patriots since their 41-33 loss on the game’s biggest stage — most notably the team recapturing the Super Bowl just one year later — but one man is still not over the defeat almost two years later: Tom Brady. The six-time world champion was asked about the upcoming rematch between the Patriots and Eagles during an appearance on WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show on Monday morning, and he made sure to remind the host that the memory of that fateful day in February 2018 was still fresh on his mind: “You assume I’m over it. Come on now! There’s a lot of mental scar tissue from that year. That was a tough game,” said Brady when the topic came up.

With Dallas losing to Minnesota, the Eagles and Cowboys are both 5-4 with seven regular season games to go. The Eagles’ remaining schedule is easier than the Cowboys’ slate ... on paper, at least. The Week 16 game between the Eagles and Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field could very well decide the winner of the NFC East. The Cowboys currently have the edge on the Eagles since they beat the Birds back in Week 7. But the Eagles quietly have a big advantage of their own: the common games tiebreaker. There’s a realistic situation where the Eagles and Cowboys end up tied when it comes to: 1) overall record, 2) head-to-head record, and 3) division game record. In that event, commons games would be the next determining factor. And the Eagles are currently 3-1 against four common opponents that the Cowboys have gone 1-3 against this season. The difference comes from the Eagles having defeated the Green Bay Packers and New York Jets while the Cowboys lost to them.

It was impossible to watch football Sunday without watching incredible catch after incredible catch and wondering what it would be like if just one of those guys was an Eagle. Eagles wideouts can’t make the routine catches. Other teams have guys who make impossible ones. Watching other teams play football during the bye week really reinforced what we already knew: The Eagles’ wideouts are the worst in the league. They don’t make plays. And it really makes you appreciate what Carson Wentz has been able to do despite being hamstrung by this horribly underachieving group.

Marcus Epps makes sense for the Eagles. He can play CB, S or nickel. We know Jim Schwartz likes versatile DBs so Epps is a good fit. Epps is going to need time to learn the playbook. It will be interesting to see if he’s active this week or if the team gives him time to adjust. This move is more about the future than the present. The Eagles are healthy enough at CB right now that they don’t need three veteran safeties. They can move other guys around. Epps could help in a few weeks. He also gets to audition for a role next year. The Eagles need young talent at safety. They now get a chance to see if Epps is worth keeping around.

Pat Shurmur is still head coach of the New York Giants. He held a conference call with New York media Monday afternoon that proved it. Shurmur reiterated during the call that despite being 2-8 and having lost six straight, he is not planning to make any changes to the coaching staff during the bye week. “No I’m not going to make any coaching changes,” Shurmur said. “It’s important that we coach and play better, period.” The bye week, without the immediate pressure of preparing for another opponent, gives Shurmur and his coaching staff an opportunity to look at what has gone right, what has gone wrong and figure out ways to address whatever needs to be fixed.
