Big loss for Washington.

UPDATE: NFL insider Ian Rapoport says Washington is “not expecting to have Jordan Reed” for Sunday’s game against the Eagles. Washington promoted practice squad tight end J.P. Holtz to their roster in anticipation of Reed’s absence. Also, Reed did not travel to Philly.

It’s sounding like the Philadelphia Eagles’ Week 1 opponent might be without one of their best offensive players for Sunday’s game.

Recent reports about Washington tight end Jordan Reed, who is still recovering from a concussion, don’t seem to paint an optimistic outlook.

Washington listed Reed as “questionable” on the team’s final injury report after the 29-year-old tight end was limited in practice all week. As of Friday afternoon, Washington head coach Jay Gruden said Reed still hadn’t been officially cleared for contact.

We could find out more about Reed’s status today on Saturday. Washington has until 4:00 PM Eastern to make any roster moves ahead of Sunday’s game. If they promote a practice squad tight end to the active roster, that could very well confirm Reed won’t be playing.

Reed’s potential absence would be a big loss for Washington; he led the team in receiving yards last season. Washington could instead be starting a 35-year-old Vernon Davis with Jeremy Sprinkle (seven career catches) backing him up.

Washington is already without their top offensive player since starting left tackle Trent Williams is missing Sunday’s game. Reed’s absence could make life even easier for the Eagles’ defense.
