NFC East draft preview

(Bad) decision time

The draft is just days away. Soon enough, good picks and trades will be made, and bad picks and trades will be made. Some of them will involve the Nfc East.

Philadelphia Eagles

What picks do they have?

A 1st, two 4ths, two 5ths and a 6th. This is a lousy stock of picks, but the Eagles won the Super Bowl so who cares.

What do they need?

Even though their current running back depth chart had 1,625 yards from scrimmage last year, they could use another running back.

Even though their oldest returning cornerback is 24, they could use another cornerback.

Even though they won a Super Bowl without their starting middle linebacker and left tackle, they could use another linebacker and tackle.

But need? They’re pretty low on draft needs.

What will they probably do?

In the 1st round trade down, and take the best player available that isn’t a QB, in later rounds shore up the few areas that don’t have incredible depth.

What’s the worst thing they could do?

Other than draft a QB with their first pick or draft a punter or kicker at all, there aren’t many options for the Eagles to something senseless. (I am prepared to be hilariously wrong on this.)

Dallas Cowboys

What picks do they have?

A 1st, 2nd, 3rd, two 4ths, a 5th, three 6ths and a 7th. Not a bad collection for a team with no depth.

What do they need?

Everything but running back, quarterback, center, and offensive tackle.

What will they probably do?

Reach for a wide receiver in the 1st, then continue to draft for need.

What’s the worst thing they could do?

With a bunch of late picks and ten in total, you can be sure the Cowboys will trade up at some point. Trading up in early rounds is fine for a team like say, the Falcons, who are oh so close to a Super Bowl. For a team like the Cowboys who think they are oh so close to a Super Bowl, trading up early isn’t the wisest plan. Add in that the draft is in Dallas and it’s all but certain that the Cowboys will make a splash just to make a splash.

Washington Cowboys

What picks do they have?

A 1st, 2nd, 4th, two 5ths, a 6th and two 7ths. This, and the whole team, would look better if they hadn’t traded a 3rd (and Kendall Fuller) for Alex Smith. Oh well.

What do they need?

A new GM who has a clue what he is doing.

They could also use talent at every skill position and some help on defense.

What will they probably do?

There should be some really good defensive talent available at 13, they should take one. With Bruce Allen back in charge, they’ll wind up drafting a bunch of guys who stink over the rest of the draft.

What’s the worst thing they could do?

This is the Redskins, so there’s a lot of options. Using a second 1st round pick in four years on an interior lineman would be a pretty incredible misuse of resources.

New York Giants

What picks do they have?

A 1st, 2nd, two 3rds, a 4th and a 5th. If you’re going to be light on picks, be light on picks at the back end. The Giants are in good shape here with four picks in the top 100 and another one just outside it.

What do they need?

A quarterback.

What will they probably do?

Not draft a quarterback.

What’s the worst thing they could do?

Draft Saquon Barkley 2nd overall. If Barkley is the real deal, he will do more to prevent the Giants from once again being in position to draft a QB without trading up than any other top non-QB pick.
