One of the most pleasant surprises of the Philadelphia Eagles' 2017 season has been the play of linebacker Mychal Kendricks, a player the Birds almost traded this offseason. Thankfully for the Eagles, that trade never materialized, because they have needed him to fill in for Jordan Hicks, who is done for the season with a ruptured Achilles. In the Eagles' first game without Hicks starting in the middle of the defense, Kendricks came to play.

How about the rookie making a big play? Great job by Derek Barnett to burst through the 49ers’ field goal protection and block the kick. You have to love his effort: the Eagles were already up big in the game in the fourth quarter but he made the hustle play anyway. Special teams coordinator Dave Fipp loved it.

There is a lot of speculation about the Eagles having interest in RB Frank Gore. I have very mixed feelings on this. Gore is one of my all-time favorite non-Eagles. I love the physicality of his running, plus the fact he is such a smart player. I would love to see him in this offense. At the same time, he’s 34 and averaging 3.7 yards per carry. To be fair, that average is driven down by one game (25-57 vs CLE), but he’s clearly a declining player. How much is left in the tank? If the Colts cut him, I’d be all over bringing him in, but a trade? I’m not so sure. At most, I’m giving up a future late-rounder. The Eagles run game was at its best in 2016 when Ryan Mathews ran hard and broke tackles. It has been most effective this year with LeGarrette Blount doing the same thing. The difference is that he doesn’t have Mathews speed. Gore doesn’t either, but he is faster than Blount.

Bo had a good breakdown of Vaitai's performance after the game. I thought he was OK. It's not like Vaitai was a huge liability, but at the same time, I'm not ready to say the Eagles are fine at left tackle. Let's see how he does next week against the Denver Broncos. Meanwhile, the Eagles used Isaac Seumalo as their sixth lineman on nine snaps. He did not look comfortable at all. The Eagles would be in huge trouble if Vaitai or Johnson were to go down.
