Eagles reportedly host Corey Clement on pre-draft visit

Local guy.

The Eagles are set to host Wisconsin running back Corey Clement on a pre-draft visit, according to a report from Dave Heller of Fox Sports (hat tip to PhillyVoice’s Jimmy Kempski). Clement is from Glassboro, New Jersey so the thinking here is this visit is a local one and doesn’t count the top 30 limit.

Clement, 22, measures in at 5-10, 220 pounds. In four years with the Badgers, he accumulated 36 touchdowns and 3092 yards on 576 rushing attempts (5.4 average). He also caught 29 receptions for two scores and 279 yards.

CBS Sports projects Clement to be an early Day 3 pick. They have him ranked as the 13 best rusher in this year’s class. BGN’s Ben Natan ranked Clement 21st while BGN’s Jonny Page had him 10th overall. Here’s why Jonny is interested in Clement:

One of the good things about being from England, is that I have no idea who most of these guys are when watching them. I know there's no buzz around him so I was surprised myself but I really liked Clement's tape. I thought he had great size, a good enough burst and speed to get to the corner. I also thought he showed the ability to make you miss in a number of ways, he has a good jump cut but can also run through tackles and showed good contact balance. He can't do anything on 3rd down but I think he shows good patience and could replace what Ryan Mathews gave us last year (to an extent). After watching Clement, I looked him up and realized he has injury and character concerns which meant he missed the 2015 season. Anyway, I think he shows potential and he'll be someone in the late rounds I keep my eye on.

Clement’s injury issues (hand, sports hernia, ankle) and character concerns (lied to coaches, questionable attitude) are two big reasons why the Eagles will have Clement in for a visit. They’ll want to get more information about these situations in order to better determine their grade on Clement.

Philadelphia obviously needs a new running back but Clement might not be the solution. NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein describes him as a “committee back.” The Eagles already have enough of those; they need a real three down player in the backfield.
