NFL Draft 2017: Eagles will host freak athlete defensive back on official visit

Add another name to the list.

The Philadelphia Eagles are hosting Connecticut defensive back Obi Melifonwu on an official pre-draft visit today, according to a report from Aaron Wilson. Melifonwu is one of 30 prospects who will visit the Eagles leading up to the 2017 NFL Draft.

The 22-year-old Melifonwu measures in at 6-4, 207 pounds. In four years with the Huskies, Melifonwu recorded 349 tackles, 16 passes defensed, eight interceptions, and two forced fumbles.

Melifonwu is an interesting player as far as the Eagles’ interest is concerned. He played at cornerback before converting to safety for UConn. But is he going to be a safety in the NFL?

Melifonwu is projected to be a Day 1 or Day 2 pick and the Eagles don’t have a need at that spot with Malcolm Jenkins and Rodney McLeod in the fold. So it seems very possible Philadelphia is looking at him as a cornerback. Some feel he best projects to that position in the NFL.

Melifonwu is an even better prospect than [Byron] Jones, and has the versatility to play multiple positions across the secondary, as well as linebacker in certain situations. No matter what, Melifonwu is raw and unpolished, but with his elite athletic ability and body type, I believe his upside is at its highest as an outside cornerback, with the potential to become a legitimate physical shut-down CB in the NFL.

While there may be questions about his polish, there are no questions about his athleticism. Check out his freakish measurables:

This visit doesn’t mark the first time the Eagles have shown interest in the UConn player. The team also had scouts on hand to watch him at his pro day.
