The Transfer Portal is officially open. While players have been free to announce their intentions to pick up stakes and change schools anytime they want, today is the first day in which they may actually enter their name into the online database generated by the NCAA for student-athletes looking for a fresh start.

Every year of this endeavor the number of players choosing to put their names into the portal has continued to rise. With the advent of NIL, that trend is unlikely to abate. Basically, you need a program just to remember who the ball boy is going to be this year. So, we thought it would be helpful to have a one stop shop for relevant SEC and other college football Transfer Portal news.

Georgia Bulldog-specific transfer news will pop up in this spot as well, but look for that to get a more in-depth treatment elsewhere on the site.

Bulldogs lose a series of not unexpected transfers.

Georgia has so far mostly lost players who were expected to move on, veterans who are clearly good football players, even major contributors, but haven’t cracked the starting lineup consistently and will likely find more playing time elsewhere.

* Brock Vandagriff has announced he’s leaving UGA. Call me a glass half full guy, but this feels a little like him betting on Carson Beck being back in 2024 and not being willing to wait until 2025 to fight it out with Stockton, Raiola and Puglisi.

* Austin Blaske is also transferring. The junior offensive lineman out of Effingham County has seen extended action as a reserve in 2022 and 2023 and May have had a chance to fight for a starting spot in 2024. He’ll likely have a shot at transferring to a Power 5 program for his remaining two seasons of eligibility.

* Reserve wide receiver Jackson Meeks is hitting the road out of Athens as well. After promising freshman and sophomore campaigns the Phenix City native caught only one pass for 23 yards in 2023, though he’s been a major contributor on special teams. Like Blaske he’ll have two years of eligibility remaining.

* Reserve outside linebacker C.J. Madden has announced his entry into the portal. Madden enrolled in 2022 and didn’t see action as a true freshman but recorded 3 tackles in 7 appearances in 2023.

* We have our first big transfer of the window with news that Ohio State starting quarterback Kyle McCord has entered the portal. McCord threw for 3124 yards for the 11-1 Buckeyes. Rumors had it that Buckeye coach Ryan Day however told McCord that he would be looking for a quarterback in the portal to provide competition, and wouldn’t guarantee that McCord will be the starter entering 2024. I take from this that Day knows he has to beat Michigan and make a title run in 2024 or the University will be transferring his belongings out of his office. McCord, a former five star prospect in the class of 2021, will draw a ton of interest. McCord is the fifth Buckeye to enter the portal so far.

* Vanderbilt quarterbacks AJ Swann and Ken Seals are both officially in the portal. Together they accounted for 96.2% of the Dores’ passing attempts in 2023. All told Vanderbilt could have 20+ transfers as the Clark Lea era continues to look a lot like other eras of Vanderbilt football.

* We have our first Bulldog in the portal as reserve defensive lineman Jonathan Jefferson announces his departure.

Jefferson played in seven games this season recording only one tackle. He’ll leave Athens with two seasons of eligibility remaining.

* Texas A&M defensive tackle Walter Nolan has entered the portal. The Tennessee native and former #1 overall prospect in the class of 2022 strongly considered Georgia and the home state Vols before joining a host of highly-touted players in College Station, most of whom have already left. I would give my eye teeth to have him in Athens.

* Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel is transferring. Gabriel originally signed with Central Florida despite a late offer from Georgia, then transferred to Norman. In 2023 he threw for 3660 yards and 30 touchdowns versus 6 interceptions. He’ll have one year of eligibility as a graduate transfer.
