When the 2023 college football season comes to an end, it’ll mark the end of many eras for the sport. We’ll say goodbye to things like geographical-based conferences, rivalries that mean something and in a local sense, the SEC East vs. West Division Champs playing in Atlanta.

But we’re also saying Farewell to something else.

The SEC On CBS. After this weekend, you won’t hear that iconic intro music and see a matchup among SEC teams. That’s because, like all things, times are changing with the CBS contact going away from the SEC.

When you heard those opening chords come across the TV on a Saturday afternoon, you knew that what you were about to see was a big deal. As the phrase at one time said, “the best game from the best conference.”

With the profile of Georgia’s program rising under Mark Richt, the Dawgs were in lots of those games, and it’s hard to forget many of them from 2001 and 2002 - the wins at Tennessee, South Carolina, and Auburn.

Jacksonville memories? There have been way too many of the fond ones to count from the “Gator Stomp” celebration in 2007 and Kirby Smart’s teams having a ‘there will be blood’ approach on the Gators.

And who can forget one of the biggest night games in Sanford Stadium history? 2019 against Notre Dame. And no CBS memory can be complete without the 2007 Auburn Blackout Game. And the fun extended to the broadcast booth...

You got the sense from the CBS announcers, especially Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson when they teamed together, that calling these games was not a job - it was something that they loved being able to do each week.

We’ll miss you, SEC On CBS.
