Between The Bases: SEC play getting closer

Just two Weekend series remain until the Diamond Dawgs start SEC play, so there’s no time like the present to fine-tune things with North Florida in town this weekend.

That’s especially true with Georgia looking to start a win streak after its run of seven wins in a row was halted in Wednesday’s 6-4 loss to Kennesaw State.

In that defeat, baserunning miscues and hitting into multiple double plays helped keep the game close, and the Owls rallied to win.

If Georgia is to be a team built on strong pitching and a team that does not score six runs per game, it’ll have a slim margin of error. The Diamond Dawgs are currently hitting .297 as a team and are led at the plate by Connor Tate’s .500 batting average and eight RBI.

The good news for Georgia is that as it continues to give plenty of freshman pitchers looks, other expereinced arms are getting back into form to complement CJ Smith, who remains the Friday night Weekend Series starter.

One all-american, senior Ryan Webb continues to work his way back from an illness, having thrown three innings last weekend on a pitch count, giving up a hit. Another all-american, Johnathan Cannon, is slated to debut next weekend. Given that, Georgia has a great chance to figure more out in the next two weeks what its young arms can really do, something that will be more important deeper into conference play and to the postseason. Speaking of young hurlers, Jaden Woods gets his third start on Sunday, having failed to get a decision in two previous starts.

Much like Wednesday against Kennesaw State, a team you can usually expect to contend to a conference title and regional berth, UNF should bring the same type of rigor. The Ospreys are from a perenially strong Atlantic Sun Conference, and they opened the season by winning at Florida State.
