Welcome to the first day of the rest of your week! We're into the single digits in the countdown of days until the Georgia Bulldogs play College Football. Thus, there’s not a lot of time to waste. Here’s what’s making news this morning in Bulldog Nation:

The Big Ten’s seemingly reluctant return to the College gridiron remains one of the major stories in sports. I’m steering clear of the question of whether or not the B1G should be playing Football this season.

But I will say this. After several weeks of watching various individuals affiliated with the Big Ten preen and prance publicly around their moral superiority it’s pretty clear what happened. The Big Ten (or some faction thereof) once again gave into the league’s historic delusion: that you can be Harvard and Auburn at the same time. In the end, football is the tail that wags the dog at Nebraska and Ohio State to no lesser extent than at North Carolina State or Ole Miss.

If you’re enjoying all the “Will they or won’t they?” surrounding college football, remember that basketball season was supposed to start roughly eight weeks from now. It looks like that’s being moved back a little, at least for now. It’s easy to forget that the NCAA itself really has precious little control over college football. They don’t make the TV deals. They don’t run the playoff. But basketball, and the NCAA tournament specifically, are their shindig. The folks in Indianapolis aren’t letting that get cancelled two years running if there’s any way to avoid it.

Yesterday LugNut Dawg brought you the news of one UGA football commit departing. On the bright side, Bulldog receiver commit Jackson Meeks is, as expected, moving up the recruiting rankings thanks to a fast start to his senior season. For all the talk about Kirby Smart and his staff perennially going after the highest-ranked players in the nation, it’s worth remembering that they’ve also done an excellent job of identifying late-developing prospects who then go on to become key contributors in Athens.

One of those late additions who’s become an important part of the Red and Black defense is defensive tackle Jordan Davis. DawgNation has a nice profile on the big guy’s journey from a lightly recruited player out of Charlotte to a potential first round draft pick. A key point in the profile for Bulldog fans, something that worries me just a touch, is that there’s really not a proven replacement for Davis on the roster. Dan Lanning may need his zero technique nose tackle to stay healthy more than any other player on the roster.
