Where we review the National Media Thoughts on Georgia Football

The Bulldog Faithful has a long, storied history of “Munsoning.” For those weaned to the sounds of the unequaled Larry Munson, the notion of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory must be ever-present or we just don’t feel right. The question on everyone’s mind week in and week out this season will be, did Georgia help or hurt their chances of making it to the playoffs? That question isn’t likely to be answered inside the Dawgosphere, so I thought I’d wander about the interwebs and see what the larger College Football Media has to say. After all, the National Sports Media likely has more influence over the Committee than the Dawgosphere does.

“Texas A&M saved its best for the last quarter at No. 4 Georgia. The upset-minded Aggies, however, weren’t able to overcome their offensive ineptitude of the first three quarters.”

“While the Bulldogs struggled offensively, the defense turned in another dominating performance until the closing minutes, when fatigue set in and the unit had to get by without top cornerback Eric Stokes, who left with an undisclosed injury.”

Last week we learned the Committee prefers the whole resume to comparing single game losses, ranking Georgia in the #4 slot just above Alabama. Nothing that happened this weekend should result in a major change in that ranking. The comments this weekend in the National media echo what the Dawg Sports community is saying – the Defense is “dominating” and “good enough to put up a fight against LSU” while the offense is hampered missing Cager and struggling.

Win two more and Georgia’s in the playoffs, everyone knows that. Win one more and lose a close one to LSU and we’re at the mercy of the committee. Oregon’s loss this week helps us in that situation. With Tua gone for the season, will Auburn hand Bama a loss in the Iron Bowl? If that happens, is Georgia in the playoffs even with a close loss to LSU? The 538 predictor says if Georgia beats Tech and Bama loses to Auburn we have a 53% chance of making the playoffs. If we add in LSU wins out, our chances drop to 13% while OU and Utah’s both rise very slightly. If Bama wins the Iron Bowl and LSU wins the SECCG, we end up at 9%. Let’s hope & pray Cager’s healthy for the SECCG he seems to be the key to making our offense click.
