Thursday Morning Dawg Bites Asks “How Soon(er) is Now?”

You shut your mouth. How can you say I go about things the wrong way?

Like you, I’m thrilled about being in the College Football Playoff and playing in the Rose Bowl in Kirby Smart’s 2nd year at the helm. It’s just that the wait is killing me. It is excruciating. Would I be happier if we were in the Independence Bowl and I only had to wait two weeks? Not a chance. But It would definitely feel like this interminable waiting was drawing to a close... plus, I wouldn’t care as much.

I think there are a number of reasons why I’m struggling with the break between games more this year than in the past. First off, any time you have the level of anticipation we have about this game, it’s going to slow your perception of the passage of time. Much as my children feel like Christmas morning is never going to arrive, so too do I feel that the Rose Bowl is forever away. Additionally, as many of you likely have, I’ve been super busy. Under normal circumstances, this might actually make the time pass more quickly. However, I have such a massive list of things to get through before beginning the winter break, that all I can think about is how much time completing that list is going to occupy. And then it stretches out forever. Finally, I’ll refer you to the words of Mr. Steven Patrick Morrissey above. Derive from them what you will, but just know that I am quite ready to get past the “Here’s what will happen!” phase, for this game to finally be played, and to find out what will actually happen.

In the meantime, let’s kill a few of those pesky minutes with your Thursday Morning Dawg Bites:

  • In recruiting news, DE Jaevon Becton decommitted from the Dawgs. Aaron Brule postponed signing on the first day of the early signing period. Brule tweeted the following regarding his decision: “I’ve got some things I need to look into.” Brule is now planning to wait until the February signing period to announce his decision. Recruits change their minds for all kinds of reasons (particularly when new coaching hires are involved, as they are with Becton). I’m in no way saying this is the case for these two young men, but this development got me thinking about how the new early signing period may change things. I can easily see a future where a certain segment of the available recruits wait until after the December signing period to assess their potential to crack the rotation at a given school. And you know coaches will be using those December decisions on the trail. It should add a new wrinkle to what was already an incredibly complex recruiting process.
  • Alright, y’all know I don’t care for the AJC... and we all know all the content already... but if they give me a page all about Uga and a video slideshow? Yeah, I’m gonna be linking that.
  • Regarding in-state recruiting, The Senator gives voice to what we all know to be true. But that won’t stop us from hearing about this kid or that kid that UGA let slip through its fingers because we “couldn’t build a fence around the state.” As long as we continue getting the best players and the best players for what we want to do, I’ll be happy as a clam. If the NCAA wants to go ahead and double (or triple) our scholarship limit, we can talk about “locking down the state.” Until then, we good.
  • There isn’t anything about this that I don’t love. I take that back. I don’t love the typo in the headline. If you’re just going to post someone else’s tweet, you have the time to double-check your spelling. #thatguy
  • And I never get tired of a good Loran Smith profile piece.

Oh, that’s another thing I hate about this long layoff: not enough news. Which, of course, means that idle hands get busy doing the Devil’s work (as you may have noticed lately).

So that’s all for now, folks. Until next time...

GOOOO DAWGS!!!
