Sports in Europe during June
All eyes are on Russia this month for the football World Cup, one of the biggest events in any sports calendar… but there are other things happening across Europe. Cricket is being played in the UK, Cycling events are being held across multiple countries including France and Switzerland, and European Basketball leagues are into their postseasons.
Here are your options in Europe during June:
The FIFA World Cup: Russia
The attention of the sporting world right now is on Russia, and the 2018 World Cup. You… might have heard of it. It’s on the bucket list of many, many sports fans.
If, somehow, you’ve avoided hearing much about the World Cup until now, here’s a quick, dot-point summary to bring you up to speed:
■ The tournament begins with teams from 32 nations, who have been playing off to qualify (or not qualify) since 2015.
■ There are two stages to the tournament: the group stage and the knockout stage.
■ Each team is initially placed into a group of 4, so the group stage is a round robin where all of the teams in a group play each other, with points allocated for wins, losses or draws. At the end of this stage, the two nations with the most points in each group progress through to the knockout stage.
■ The knockout stage is a 16-team single game elimination tournament: win or go home. This stage begins on June 30th, with the World Cup final to be played on July 15th.

Other sports picks for Europe in June
French Open (Tennis) – Roland Garros, Paris, France, 28 May – 10 Jun
We spoke about this last month. Every Grand Slam tennis tournament has unique & distinguishing features that make it worth the journey, and Roland Garros is no different. If you’re going to be in Paris and want to see the clay courts in person, you can look for tickets to Court Phillip Chartrier, the main show court, or Court Suzanne Lenglen.
Liga ACB Finals (basketball) – Madrid & Vitoria, Spain, 13th – 22nd June
The top basketball league in Spain concludes this month, with the postseason due to wind up by June 22nd. The final playoff series is a best-of-five game series, with the first team to win 3 games being declared the league champion. Basketball fans might recognise some future and past NBA stars on the rosters for these teams. This year the finals will be played between Real Madrid and Baskonia in games in Madrid and Vitoria on 13th, 15th, 17th, 19th and 22nd of June.

French Grand Prix (F1) – Le Castellet, France, 22 Jun – 24 Jun
For the first time since 2008, the French Grand Prix is back on the F1 Championship schedule. For the first time since 1990, it will be held at the Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet, a venue that has been hosting races since the 1970s. After a first-place finish at the Canadian Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel leads the standings by a single point, so this will be an important race in the scheme of the F1 Championship.
