Sports Calendar: June in USA

Sports in the USA during June

Two words: “NBA Finals”. Wait, three more: “Stanley Cup Playoffs”! How about “baseball”, “soccer”, “Triple Crown” or “US Open golf”? June is a wonderful time to be a sports fan heading to the United States, with three of the four major codes still in action.

Tickets to the biggest events won’t be cheap, but if you (or someone you know) is going to be in the USA in June, this is the ultimate guide to the biggest events on the sporting calendar in America this month.

As always, make sure you visit Sports Where I Am, the best site to buy sports tickets & get fan advice for venues you’re attending.

NBA Finals

We know why you’re here. You’re here for King James, the Cavs, and the star-studded Warriors, who are set to face off in a fourth-straight NBA Finals series.

Yes, the match-up might be wearing thin for some punters, but that’s a good thing for sports fans such as yourselves – “NBA Finals fatigue” could mean that tickets are cheaper than in previous years.

As a general rule, seats will be easier to get in Cleveland… because it’s Cleveland. And often, the price of flying from San Francisco to Cleveland AND buying a ticket will be cheaper than watching the Warriors at home. Just some food for thought…

The series kicks off in Oakland for two games before heading to Ohio for two. If necessary, the two cities then alternate home court for the remaining three fixtures, with home-court advantage going to the Warriors.

NBA FINALS TICKETS:

Oakland: May 31, June 3, June 11*, June 17*

Cleveland: June 6, June 8, June 14*

Top sports picks for the USA in June

  • Washington Capitals vs Vegas Golden Knights: Washington DC, June 2, 4 and 10

This is the real deal, folks. The Stanley Cup Finals! They’ve already started, with the first two matches having been played in Vegas in May, but the series heads to Washington for Games 2 and 3 (and Game 7, if required!) in early June. Take a break from all the museums, old buildings and politics, and snag yourself some tickets to history! The Caps are playing in their first Stanley Cup Finals since 1995, so you just know Capital One Arena will be off-chops! Get your tickets here.

  • Vegas Golden Knights vs Washington Capitals: Las Vegas, NV, June 7 and 13

When you think of Las Vegas, sport isn’t the first thing that jumps to mind… and that’s because before this year, there was no major team based in the desert city in any of the major codes. But – just one year into their existence – the Vegas Golden Knights are into the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Looking for something different to do in Vegas? Get to the hockey – they are an exciting team to watch. Get your tickets here.

  • New York Mets vs New York Yankees: Queens, NY, June 8-10

Mets or Yankees? The quintessential question for all New Yorkers. Despite not being in the same division, this series is well worth watching, as you can be guaranteed the stadium will be packed and brimming with friendly banter. No, this series isn’t at the famous Yankee Stadium, but Citi Field does have one thing the Yanks don’t – Shake Shack. Don’t know what that is? Google it… it will change your life! Get your tickets here.

  • Belmont Stakes: Elmont, NY, June 9

This is a niche event, but well worth mentioning for its significance. In isolation, the Belmont Stakes might not appeal to many, but when you throw in the fact that Justify (a horse, in case you hadn’t gathered) is aiming to be just the 13thhorse to sweep the American Triple Crown in 100 years, making the short trek out of New York to Elmont doesn’t seem like the worst idea. It’s only an hour on the train or a 40-minute drive from downtown Manhattan.

  • US Open Golf tournament: Southampton, NY, June 11-17

If you thought The Masters was a high-class affair only accessible to the rich and famous – or for those who have saved up for years – you’re right. Unfortunately, the US Open golf tournament is just as exclusive and just as expensive. But don’t let that discourage your from getting along. After all, it does combine two attractions: golf and the Hamptons.

  • LA Dodgers vs San Francisco Giants: Los Angeles, CA, June 15-17

The Dodgers vs the Giants. Los Angeles vs San Francisco. The all-California series in LA from June 15 until June 17 is the perfect stretch for baseball fans wanting to take in some decent ball with a decent atmosphere. Our pick of the bunch? The Kenley Jansen Star Wars Bobblehead Day on Friday the 15th, when the first 40,000 through the gates will get a free bobblehead on arrival. Worth it! Get your tickets here.

  • NCAA Men’s College World Series: Omaha, NE, June 16-26

You read that right – the WORLD SERIES is heading to Omaha, Nebraska! No, not the MLB World Series (that’ll take place in late October), but the NCAA Men’s College World Series! The best college players from the best teams will be on show for all to see in the Midwestern town of Omaha, so, if for ANY reason you find yourself in the area, it’s… probably the only thing on in town in June.

  • New York Yankees vs Boston Red Sox: New York, NY, June 29-July 1

We’re going to keep encouraging you to get to a Yankees-Red Sox series because it’s a legitimate bucket list item. There’s nothing like watching baseball in the Bronx, and there’s no rivalry in baseball quite like this one. What should you expect? A sold-out stadium, a killer atmosphere and some amazing baseball (Boston and New York are first and second in the AL East at time of writing). Get your tickets here.

  • Atlanta United vs Orlando City: Atlanta, GA, June 30

Yet again, MLS makes its way onto this list, we’re sure to the surprise of some of you. Don’t be surprised – Atlanta United is one of the biggest teams in the States, and have drawn crowds in excess of 70,000 to some games at their new (and AMAZING!) stadium which they share with the Falcons. This game isn’t one to sniff at, either. In fact, a recent poll of Atlanta United’s fans found that a whopping 84% of supporters consider Orlando City SC as their side’s No. 1 rival. If you’re in the South towards the end of the month, get on down. Get your tickets here.

Best value games

  • Houston Astros vs Boston Red Sox: Houston, TX, June 1-3

Two words: world champions. We know that US sports teams and codes cop a lot of stick for declaring the winner of their domestic league the “world champions”, but to bolster our argument for why you should get to this series, we’re going to run with it. The defending champs are hosting the AL East-leading Red Sox in early June. If you’re flying into Texas for a stopover or a visit, this is a value pick for any sports fan. Get your tickets (from just $40) here.

For something different

  • NBA Draft: Brooklyn, NY, June 21The NBA Finals might have been run-and-done by the time late June comes around, but it doesn’t mean the season is completely over. In fact, fans in the New York area on June 21 will have the opportunity to attend on one of the biggest nights on the calendar: the NBA Draft. Whether you’re a fan of the Phoenix Suns – who hold the first overall pick – or just want to soak in the unique festivities (at a very reasonable price), the NBA Draft is a left-field choice and an opportunity which doesn’t come along often. Get your tickets here.
  • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmIURIqjDmYYou could be there when a fanbase embarrasses themselves like Knicks fans did in 2015 (above).
