Sports in Europe during March
March is the beginning of a busy few months on the European sports calendar. Different sporting codes start to overlap in the middle section of the year in Europe much more than in the United States (where seasons start to thin out a little during summer). During March, major European Soccer leagues continue, as well as Basketball, Cycling tours and Rugby League tournaments. The Rugby Union 6 Nations Championship tournament also reaches its conclusion this month.
Here’s a summary of your options throughout Europe during March:
As always, make sure you visit Sports Where I Am, the best site to buy sports tickets & get fan advice for venues you’re attending.
SWIAM picks for the month
Real Madrid vs FC Barcelona: Barcelona, March 11
Basketball, SPAIN
The top two teams in the Liga Endesa table (at the time of writing) play each other at Palau Blau Grana in Barcelona on March 11th. Attending Basketball in Europe is a vastly different experience than other sports – described by our users as “a more intimate experience” than the larger stadiums used for Football – with a very dedicated & passionate fanbase. A good opportunity to see a great standard of basketball. You can get tickets here.

Vitoria Guimaraes Vs Sl Benfica: Lisbon, March 31
Football (Soccer), PORTUGAL
Estadui da Luz is an iconic stadium in the world of Football – one that every fan should aim to get to at some point. This game features the currently 2nd and 9th-placed teams facing off. A unique experience for you to add to your Portugal trip itinerary. Get tickets here.
Ireland vs England (Six Nations tournament): London, March 17
Rugby Union, ENGLAND
Disclaimer: Tickets to this one aren’t going to be cheap… and you can see why. Ireland is yet to be beaten at this year’s 6 Nations Tournament and England are looking to defend their championship victory in 2017. This should be a great match with an exciting atmosphere at Twickenham Stadium. You can buy tickets here if you’re dedicated and/or rich.
Can @IrishRugby hold their unbeaten record for the 2018 Championship?
A few points Joe Schmidt will have to consider ahead of today's team announcement https://t.co/QcQYxzhsO8#NatWest6Nations pic.twitter.com/LjiTIyVLMN

Brazil vs Germany (International Friendly): Berlin, March 27
Football (Soccer), GERMANY
This friendly is the first time these two countries have faced off since Germany’s 7-1 rout of Brazil in the 2014 World Cup. With the next World Cup in Russia not too far away, both countries will be looking to put in a good performance. Also a good opportunity to try the Currywurst and Fries at Olympiastadion in Berlin! Get tickets here.
Liverpool FC vs Manchester United: Manchester, March 10
Football (Soccer), ENGLAND
One of the biggest & most historic rivalries in all of English sports. Manchester United have been a measuring stick for professional sports teams around the world over the last decade – how many teams have you heard declare themselves as “The Manchester United of ________“? However, Liverpool are on the rise with arguably better prospects & form than Man U right now. Should be a huge clash. Tickets… will be hard to come by.

For value
Italy vs Scotland (Six Nations tournament): Rome, March 17
Rugby Union, ITALY
Italy are currently winless in the 6 nations tournament, which is why this appears in the ‘value’ section. For a price much cheaper than the other 6 Nations match listed above, you can see a team and a crowd likely desperate for a home win to possibly avoid the Wooden Spoon. Also – Sarah has been to Stadio Olimpico in Rome! It’s worth checking out. Buy tickets here.
For something different
Paris-Nice Cycling Tour: Paris-Nice, March 4-11
Cycling, FRANCE
If you’re travelling through France during early March, you can try to visit the route of the Paris-Nice cycling tour for a different type of sporting event with some unrivalled scenery. If you’re in Italy, you can also look up the Tirreno-Adriatico Race between the 7th and the 13th.
