Sports Calendar: Australia in March

Sports on in March in Australia

March is a significant month on the Australian sports calendar. The nation’s two biggest sports leagues, the AFL and the NRL, begin their 2018 seasons this month. In addition, notable events like the Formula 1 Grand Prix and the NBL postseason are sure to draw a huge amount of interest. We also have the continuation of the A-League and AFLW seasons as well as the early stages of 2018 Super Rugby.

You’ve got plenty of options in Australia during March:

As always, make sure you visit Sports Where I Am, the best site to buy sports tickets & get fan advice for venues you’re attending.

Top picks for the month

  • Formula 1 Grand Prix: Melbourne, March 22 – 25

The 2018 F1 calendar kicks off in Melbourne, the first of 21 Grands Prix to be held worldwide this year. With the recent passing of Ron Walker, who was chairman of the Melbourne Grand Prix for over 20 years (as well as a former Lord Mayor of the city), Melbourne is sure to honour his legacy with a huge turnout at Albert Park.

  • Carlton vs Richmond: Melbourne, March 22

The AFL season always kicks off on a Thursday night with a game between traditional rivals Carlton and Richmond. These two tortured passionate fanbases manage to draw long-term narratives out of the first game every year. This year, if reigning Premiers Richmond win, the story will be about how they “already ruined yet another Carlton season“. If Carlton manage to win, though, you can look forward to Blues fans telling you that the Tigers were exposed as “the worst team ever to win a flag“. Many neutral fans come along just to see the spectacle of a new season beginning. Expect the MCG to be packed.

AFL is back! It's an experience like no other. Make sure you tag @sportswhereiam in your photos this weekend! (@ohhsculldog)

  • NBL Finals: Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, March (dates TBC)

The NBL has continued to build its reputation as a great fan experience, with this season having some of the most highlight-worthy plays since the “glory days” of the NBL in the 90s. With games scheduled across Australia (and some in NZ), we expect the NBL postseason tickets to be highly sought-after.

NRL Double-header: Sydney, March 24

This is an interesting concept from the NRL: an all-Sydney team double-header at ANZ Stadium. The first game, between the Rabbitohs and the Sea Eagles, will kick off at 4.30. This will then be followed by Eels vs Sharks, starting at 7.30 of the same day. Worth checking out for families & NRL die-hards.

  • Adelaide United vs Newcastle Jets: Adelaide, March 23

At the time of writing, both of these teams are in the top 5 of the Hyundai A-League standings, with the end of the regular season approaching in April. It’ll be an important game for Adelaide, one the home crowd is sure to get behind. Plus, it’s a chance to get to Coopers Stadium! Head to the Joiners Arms beforehand to get amongst the atmosphere.

Best value games

  • Brisbane Lions vs Melbourne Demons: Brisbane, March 31st

Melbourne are emerging as a likely finals threat in 2018, after years (…and years) of rebuilding. The Lions, on the other hand, are in the earlier stages of a rebuild of their own. This will be a good test for the Lions, who will be looking to show some improvement, and the Demons, who will be after consistency. Also a reunion of sorts at The Gabba for a couple of ex-Hawthorn players in Luke Hodge and Jordan Lewis.

    • Rebels vs Brumbies: Melbourne, March 9

You’ve made the new-years resolution to get to some Super Rugby games this year, haven’t you? If so, it could be time to check out the new-look (and currently top-of-the-table) Melbourne Rebels at the world-class venue AAMI Park.

For something different

  • Nitro Circus: Sydney, March 24

Watch this clip and tell me you’re not just a bit intrigued about getting along to WIN Stadium to see Nitro Circus in Sydney:

Hope your #NewYearsEve is as epic as this slo-mo Nitro bomb! Can’t wait to do more of this in 2018 #NitroCircus
