Sports Calendar: USA in March

Sports on in March in the USA

March is a great month to be a sports fan in the United States. Not only is the weather starting to improve across the nation, the action is heating up in the NBA and NHL, while the MLB and MLS seasons kick off later in the month. Oh, and there’s something called March Madness as well…

So if you – or someone you know – is heading to the ‘land of the free’ in March, make sure you take note of what’s on the USA sports calendar.

As always, make sure you visit Sports Where I Am for all of your tickets and specific fan advice for each venue.

Top picks for the month

  • March Madness East Regional Finals: Boston, March 23 and 25

Thousands of people flying all across the country to watch their college teammates play ball? Yeah, it happens, and the pointy end of March Madness is something to behold. Get to Boston a couple of days earlier and experience the pro sports too – the Bruins (NHL) play March 19 and the Celtics (NBA) play March 20. Get March Madness tickets here.

  • LA Lakers vs Cleveland Cavaliers: Los Angeles, March 11

Let’s count the number of bucket list items here: Watch the LA Lakers, watch LeBron James live, watch a game at the Staples Center, have the chance to heckle Lavar Ball in person. That’s four without even really counting. For slightly cheaper tickets in Los Angeles, go two days earlier and see the Cavs and Clippers at the same arena. Get Lakers v Cavs tickets here.

  • Washington Capitals vs Toronto Maple Leafs: Annapolis, MD, March 3

Hear us out: this isn’t your everyday hockey game. This matchup is part of what’s known as the Stadium Series, where matches are taken outdoors and played in front of massive crowds. The Capitals are a crazy fun team to watch and the Leafs are in a very rich vein of form. Oh, and the Washington Wizards play in DC on both March 2 and March 4, so make a weekend of it! You can find tickets for games in Annapolis in the Baltimore section of SWIAM.

  • March Madness Final Four: San Antonio, March 31 and April 2

There aren’t too many reasons to venture to San Antonio at the best of times. Take it from me, the Alamo is okay, and the Riverwalk is… nice, but come late March, the place will come alive. Four words: March Madness Final Four. The Spurs also play on March 29 against OKC and on April 1 against the Rockets – two cracking matchups. Maybe San Antonio isn’t so bad?

  • LA Galaxy vs Portland Timbers: Los Angeles, March 4

March means the start of the local MLS season, so why not check out an LA Galaxy game? It’s the season opener, so there’s sure to be plenty to see and do before the match. Nearby, the Clippers and the Lakers also play on March 2 and March 3 respectively, while the Anaheim Ducks play on March 2 as well. Get Galaxy v Timbers tickets here.

  • LA Dodgers vs San Francisco Giants: Los Angeles, March 29

Ever wanted to see an MLB Opening Night? You’re in luck, not only because baseball begins in late March, but because you get two huge teams facing off in the Dodgers’ home opener. Tickets won’t be cheap, but it’ll be one hell of an experience. As usual, there’s basketball, hockey and MLS all on in LA at the same time… Get tickets here.

Best value games

  • LA Clippers vs New Orleans Pelicans: Los Angeles, March 6

The Clippers are having a mediocre year, so tickets to see them play are pretty cheap. For around $10, you’ll be able to watch stars such as Lou Williams and Anthony Davis in action. Get tickets here.

  • Cleveland Cavaliers vs Toronto Raptors: Cleveland, March 21

King James and the rest of his new-look Cavs, DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry? Sounds too good to be true for around $35. The problem? You have to be in Cleveland. And while it sounds like a bit of a dull place with not much going for it, you might be surprised. Check out East 4th Street, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and take a short drive down the highway to Canton where the NFL Football Hall of Fame is. It’s easy to get to from Chicago, Detroit or Pittsburgh. Get tickets here.

  • New York Islanders vs Pittsburgh Penguins: Brooklyn, March 20

Watching sport in New York can really hurt your pocket at the best of times, so why not spend the day in Brooklyn’s hipster neighbourhoods before checking out a hockey game for about $25? Oh, we forgot to mention, the game features the two-time defending NHL champions, the Pittsburgh Penguins, featuring Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel. Get tickets here.

For something different

  • Monster Jam World Finals: Las Vegas, March 23-24

Yep, you read that right. Coming to Las Vegas in mid-March? Make sure you clear your schedule from the 22nd, because the top 28 monster trucks from around the world will be at their destructive best. Get tickets here.
