Choosing a Hockey Stick – The Basics

Tags: stick

The basic hockey Stick consists of a toe with one rounded and one flat edge. The ball is hit using the flat surface, with the left hand positioned near the top of the handle and the right near the base, controlling the stick. The same stick is used by both right- and left-handers.

Weight and Positioning

The majority of players use a stick with a medium weight. However, a greater degree of control and manoeuvrability can be achieved using a lighter stick, so these are good for forwards, while defenders often like a heavier stick.

Materials and Length of Stick

Modern hockey sticks are typically constructed from a mixture of carbon, aramid and fibre glass. Many of these composite sticks have been specifically designed to offer enhanced stiffness, playing power and durability.

The player’s height will dictate the length of the stick required. The trick is to purchase the longest stick possible whilst retaining handling comfort. The longer the stick, the greater the reach, and of course, the greater the advantage to the player. Hockey sticks vary in size, ranging from 26 inches, which is suitable for shorter players and juniors, up to 38 inches, which is best for tall players with lost of experience.

Toe Style

Style of play and player position will dictate which toe type to choose. Players who are yet to choose a position should purchase a midi-toe stick. These have a hook and a shorti, so are great for stopping the ball and dribbling. Other toe types include:

Hook – This J-shaped toe is good on grass and is popular for use in a defence position as it has a larger stopping surface.

Maxi – With enhanced hitting power and larger hitting area, this is a another style popular with players in defence.

Midi – Perfect for midfielders and beginners, the midi offers a good stopping and hitting area to enhance flicking, receiving and reverse stick play.

Shorti – The shorti is best for dribbling and fast movement around the ball. Offensive players favour this stick type.
