The new phonebook's here, but since they don't list weight changes in spring there's even less than usual to glean from the updated rosters. The big notes:

• Jalen Perry is gone.
• Alessandro Lorenzetti moved to DL.
• Kalel Mullings is an LB/RB. Order of the positions seems significant?

The new guys have numbers, and some of them have interesting weights. Also there were some position changes among younger players. So let's be thorough anyways.

DEPARTURES

One guy in Michigan remembers Perry. [Patrick Barron]

The only one that wasn't announced already was cornerback Jalen Perry. Can't say that's much of a surprise since he barely played in four years, and when he'd get mention it was behind all the freshmen. Aside from his special teams work (see photo above), he did get in as Michigan's backup nickel last year, in non-competitive situations.

Here's the the full list of guys not back from last year's roster, with destinations and years of eligibility remaining where applicable.

POSITION CHANGES

Everybody give a demi-yay for for Mullings being an "LB/RB" now. [Bryan Fuller]

The big one everyone's talking about is Amorion Walker to cornerback. He's listed as a WR/DB on the roster.

The big one that we didn't know about is Alessandro Lorenzetti has been moved to defensive line in place of Dominick Giudice, whose move to offensive line was known about last year. I don't know what to make of Lorenzetti. This program does try its deep depth at other positions sometimes, if only to get them some snaps, and Lorenzetti came in more of a raw frame than a football player. It probably means they feel Lorenzetti is years away from helping on the offensive line, and that they want to shore up depth at defensive tackle after moving Giudice and coming up one guy short at the position in recruiting. It probably downgrades Lorenzetti's ceiling a few notches, since deep depth positions switches are often the first step to irrelevance (see: Jack Stewart, Phil Paea).

Of particular interest to me is Chibi Anwunah moving to tight end. Chibi was a super under-the-radar guy they found who's rumored to have Ojabo-level athleticism. Both positions require lots of it, but the fact that Elston was willing to let him try something else suggests he maybe preferred to focus on the almost-as-raw recruits he brought in.

Kalel Mullings is officially an "LB/RB." Half-Yay! issued:

It's interesting that they list LB first; that position is suddenly stacked, while he's probably the #3 guy at running back if that's his focus, with a clear path to starting next year if/when Corum/Edwards leave.

Micah Pollard moved from Edge to LB. This was something that happened during the season, since they needed linebackers, and he was always kind of a Jaylen Harrell-esque tweener.

Noah Stewart moved from OL to TE. Stewart was a 6'7"/283 offensive tackle last year, his fourth in the program. With a redshirt and a COVID year he's got a couple years left. Probably nothing, but he also could be their Honigford this season.

And for completion's sake, James Kavouklis is just a long-snapper now (lost his OL/ designation) and walk-on center Peter Simmons was moved to defensive tackle. He was a 6'2"/291 redshirt sophomore last year.

Start making your edits on your NCAA 2014 rosters, unless your DVD like mine just crapped out when you went to boot it backup recently. Go ahead and fill the comments with advice on PS3 disks; if you're reading this article we're all nerds here.

No I'm not such a nerd that I remembered all of these players on my own. There's a Bentley Database (that I've memorized).

NEW GUY SIZES

Most of the time Michigan will just use the 247Sports numbers rather than report their own for the spring enrollees. However the transfers all got re-measured, and some of the recruits came in different as well. In order of interestingness:

EDGE transfer Josiah Stewart is coming in at 6'1"/237, which is seven pounds heavier and once inch shorter than his last listing for Coastal Carolina. I hadn't heard his name yet, which is why I forgot he's already on campus, so apologies Podcast listeners. It's LaDarius Henderson who's enrolling later this year, not Stewart. Really sorry I got that wrong.

RB Benjamin Hall is listed at 5'11"/235, which is an inch taller and ten pounds heavier than his 247 listing. That's a big back.

LB transfer Ernest Hausmann is listed at 6'2"/228, eight pounds over his freshman playing weight at Nebraska.

CBs Jyaire Hill (6'2"/171) and Cameron Calhoun (6'0"/171) are both up a pound from their recruiting weights, and Hill is up an inch.

Center transfer Drake Nugent's 6'2"/306 is six pounds heavier and one inch taller than on last year's Stanford roster. Myles Hinton lost an inch; he was 6'7" on that Stanford roster and down to 6'6" on ours.

WR Semaj Morgan is at 5'10"/180 versus the 175 on his 247 listing. His teammate OL Amir Herring is at 6'3"/305. These are the same sizes listed in last year's West Bloomfield programs. WR freshman Fredrick Moore is also up a pound, from 175 to 176.

QB Jack Tuttle is 6'4"/212, a couple pounds more than he was at IU.

NUMBER CHANGES

A lot of these are just walk-ons getting out of the way of scholarship guys' choices. Some of them are also old. I'll put them in order of how interesting I found them.

Amorion Walker #1 (was #4): They've been talking him up so much at cornerback that giving him the #1 jersey with Andrel Anthony gone means less to me than giving fellow cornerback Ja'Den McBurrows's number to him. McBurrows is still listed as #1, which means first guy on the field gets it under Harbaugh's rules, but you'd think if these were the two guys competing for the #2 and #3 cornerback positions they wouldn't be wearing the same digit at this point. This is some extreme tea leaving but it's a sign the program doesn't have McBurrows as close to the field as my imagination does. Micah Pollard wears #4 on defense.

Max Bredeson #44 (was #82): Brian and Alex and Dave want to ruin my dream of a fullback, but the program keeps reigniting it.

Tyler Morris #8 (was #13): Just in case playing like Ronnie Bell wasn't enough, Morris is taking over his number too. In case throwing at him on a crucial 3rd down vs Rutgers didn't clue you in, I'm once again asking you to believe me that this guy's going to be dynamite.

Connor Jones #76 (was #60): Connor had to move aside for Nugent, so he took, oh, you know, the number that Steve Hutchinson wore, as well as Jim Brandstatter, and yeah Ryan Hayes.

Peyton O'Leary #81 (was #38): Craig Ross keeps hearing them talking up O'Leary like he was an extra recruit. He got a scholarship this spring, but lots of guys get half-year scholarships when they become available after December departures. Giving him a non-walk-on WR number is another indicator they really like O'Leary, but with Darrius Clemons and Tyler Morris coming up I don't think O'Leary is going to factor much.

LAST YEAR'S HAPPENINGS, REPORTED

These number changes happened during the course of 2022 but the program didn't update the roster until now:

Jayden Denegal #14 (was #16): This happened last year since Davis Warren took #16, but it's usually not a good sign for a young QB to switch numbers before he's seen the field. Plus you're taking away our John Navarre comp for what, a Brian Griese one?

Quinten Johnson #28 (was #14). This also happened last year and finally got reported on the rosters. Jimmy Rolder got pushed to #30 at the time.

WALK-ON CHANGES

Noah Stewart (was #61) took #33 after moving to TE. The other position change is Peter Simmons, who went from #75 on the OL to #70 on the DL. RB Danny Hughes switched from #24 (which Cabana took) to #37. LB Joel Metzger went from #39 to #54. CB Joshua Nichols went from #28 to #29. Safety Jesse Madden went from #18 to #42. And finally, CB Shomari Stone Jr. went from #30 to #37 because of Rolder. Shomari is the son of reporter Shomari Stone, who used to have a bitchin' student TV show in college where he once interviewed Charles Woodson on his couch.

HERE WE GO, NUMBER 12 AGAIN

In 1999 my friend Brandon Williams put on #12 as a true freshman at Michigan, and wore it until his eligibility expired in 2002. The dodecadozen since:

• QB Matt Gutierrez (2003-'05) transferred to Idaho State for his last two years.
• QB David Cone (2006-'08) switched to #17 in 2009.
• CB JT Floyd (2008-'10) switched to #8 in 2011.
• WR Roy Roundtree (2009-'11) took #21 as a Legends number in 2012.
• LB Allen Gant (2012-'14) switched to his uncle's #14 in 2015.
• QB Devin Gardner (2012) was already disqualified for starting his career as a #7. He wore #12 for a year and a game before taking #98 as a Legends jersey the night after the photo of B-Will above was taken.
• QB Alex Malzone (2015-'16) switched to #15 in 2017.
• P Blake O'Neill (2015) was only here for one season, so he doesn't count.
• RB Chris Evans (2016-'18) was so close! He sat out a year then came back as a #9 though.
• LB Josh Ross (2017-'21) also got close. He wore #12 for five years, but left for the NFL with a year of COVID eligibility remaining. Bzzzzt!
• QB Cade McNamara (2019-'22) was off to a good start but transferred to Iowa this offseason with a couple of years left rather than be JJ's backup again.
• CB Kody Jones started his counter in 2022. He redshirted, so he's got to make it through 2026.

If Jones doesn't do it, it's up to Semaj in 2026 or 2027. For what it's worth, B-Will's son is a D-I freshman this year, and Semaj played for B-Will's good buddy Ronald Bellamy at West Bloomfield, which makes Morgan the first candidate who probably chose the number 12 with the knowledge there's a subsection of Michigan guys in their 40s who care about this a lot.
