WTKA Roundtable 2/9/2023: Playing Through Youth
Seth February 9th, 2023 at 10:52 AM

Things discussed:

  • Chris Partridge: He knows how the SEC is doing NIL. Brian & Seth: He also knows how to coach linebackers.
  • Oversigning Assistants: You know there's gonna be attrition. Everyone's expecting Helow to have a soft landing somewhere.
  • LBs: I've been grading tough on the LBs but it's hard not to watch the TCU game and not think you need an upgrade there. Turning Junior Colson into an elite defender is how you make this into an elite group. They have depth there suddenly.
  • Hoops on a run: Didn't play defense vs Nebraska—Spike Albrecht vibes for Keisei Tomanaga. Turning the corner? We'll see against…
  • Indiana: TJD has come into his own, uses his athleticism, doesn't get bumped off his game, knows where his teammates are. A lot of respect for their role players who've added to their games. IU is starting to look more like what they were supposed to be preseason.
  • Lots of height is going to be tough on Dug, so need Hunter to win his matchup vs TJD.
  • Talk bubble if they win this game.
  • Dug: Needs to develop his 2-point game badly.
  • During the break: LCA? Better design, but they have to do something about the rich people section. They're all getting food and drinks instead of watching the game.
  • Hockey: Time to tag the interim tag off Naurato? Seems inevitable now—probably once they make the playoff, which they would have to lose out not to. Michigan's a much better team than their record: toughest schedule in the country, had the illness against Minnesota at home, had the weekend when everyone was at Juniors.
  • Billy Muckalt? Only gonna lose him to the NHL or an HC job, but Michigan can outpay most HC jobs.
  • Next class isn't that great because it was the class when Mel was in limbo. Probably not going to hurt them much because they still have some dudes and are bringing in a great class after them.

I like when Hunter has a center he can sink his teeth into versus all these moops on their schedule.

In general, the most critical problem/need for this basketball team is defense-but specifically defense in the paint. This is an individual, team and coaching issue. The opposition is making everything into a one-on-one  or two-on-two game, which stacks everything in their favor-and Michigan meekly plays along and gets taken to the woodshed. Their offense is too erratic for them to win consistently-against anyone.
