Given the embarrassment of riches at the Catalan club’s disposal, it really is difficult to imagine that no Barcelona player has won a Player of the Month award in La Liga, isn’t it? Yet that is exactly the case.
Since its creation in September 2013, no player while playing for Barcelona has won the award. An incredible fact for a club who can boast having Lionel Messi, Alexis Sanchez, Neymar Jr, Luis Suarez, Gerard Pique, Carles Puyol, Xavi, Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas, Dani Alves and Jordi Alba on its books in that time.
There is no doubting Barcelona is a European heavyweight. Just last season, they completed a historic treble – winning the UEFA Champions League, La Liga and Copa Del Rey competitions. Neymar, Messi and Suarez scored a combined 81 league goals too as Barca stormed to domination on all fronts.
The most recent award (October 2015) went to Borja Baston, an Eibar striker who scored goals against Las Palmas, Sevilla and Barcelona themselves. Could it be a case of huge misfortune or are Barcelona players simply overshadowed by a few remarkable performances each month?
This season, Neymar has eleven goals and Suarez has racked up nine of his own with the latter winning the awards’ Premier League equivalent twice in his time at Liverpool. Should these two continue their brilliant run of form and experience a further flurry of goals, Barcelona will see their first ever winner of the award.
