THE FIRST MODERN HISTORICAL TRUCK/CAR RACE OF THE BAJA PENINSULA, MEXICO

'THE TERRISUREÑA OF SOUTHERN BAJA'

"HOW WE WON THE FIRST TERRISUREÑA EVENT AND OUR EXPERIENCE WE ACQUIRED IN THE FIRST TRANSPENINSULAR RACE EVENT"

By: PATO AYALA

"The first Truck/Car race in Baja California, Mexico"

""Alberto Ayala and Manuel Parra, manned a 1938 Chevrolet, 'The Hawk of the Mountains'. They set the first record for 6 hours, 6 minutes, 57 seconds.

“The great accumulated experience, the knowledge of all types of terrain and the ability to solve mechanical failures that presented themselves to us in the difficult transpeninsular race event with its more than 3,000 kilometers of round trip, which for years we covered in a work plan with my compadre Manuel Parra and a server from Tijuana - Ensenada La Paz, were the strategic elements that we used to conquer with great advantage the maximum prize that was offered in the First Car Race the Terrisureña race event! The race started on March 11 and ended the following day in 1955 aboard a seasoned 17th El Halcón de la Sierra vehicle, 1938 Chevrolet brand six-cylinder with standard transmission".

The co-pilot Alberto Ayala said in a privileged interview for the Baja Racing Hall of Fame, the now retired aviator pilot captain, affectionately known as 'Pato' Ayala, with his more than 80 years of age, on the 64th anniversary of the first car race in Southern Baja, talks with great emotion and nostalgia, “I am the last survivor of those racers of the unforgettable great race in which vehicles of all makes and cylinder sizes participated, but limited until 1938"

"Most of them were already ahead of the afterlife; maybe a colleague is out there; However, many of the cars still work perfectly, it is incredible that time does not pass over them", he said.

CONTINGENCY AND MECHANICAL REVIEW

Prior to March 12, the mechanical inspection to verify that the engines were not altered, was carried out at the now Arturo C. Nahl baseball stadium. It was reported at the time, that 14 vehicles, as well as well-known drivers and mechanics, many of whom had extensive experience, managed to participate. on the historic dirt roads of Baja Mexico.

THE MASS

For his part, Father Zelindo Merigo officiated a mass in the cathedral of La Paz, later a parade-like tour was held with music and a great scandal in the small city of about 15,000 inhabitants. Don Alberto Ayala offered a pleasant interview at the Yeneka museum hotel, expressing with emotion that the starting signal was in front of the now State Government Palace, located on Isabel la Católica and Bravo streets.

GREEN STARTING FLAG

It was at 7 in the morning of March 11 when the first 1928 Ford model A manned by Don Luis Parra del Valle started, the second at the start, 5 minutes apart, was a Buick 1936 8-cylinder car with wooden wheels, El Tecate led by El Guero Angulo, in third position started the 1938 Chevrolet car number 17 nicknamed the Falcon of the Sierra, piloted by Manuel Parra (son) and Alberto Ayala, later started the rest of the competitors.

ACTION IN THE GAP TO THE SOUTH

As soon as they gave us a green flag, we put the whole throttle into our cars to take advantage of the straight roads from La Paz to Checkpoint 1, by the way it was a dust cloud and people crowded into each town we passed; we were locked up until Checkpoint 2, we went through the ups and downs of Checkpoint 3, when we reached the long stream of Checkpoint 4, I said to my friend Manuel, do not slow down the accelerator because here we got stuck, as I ignored him my leg on the small pedal and so we passed until we reached the bottom of the canyon, from there  we continued to run the coast.

BEFORE THE INTERMEDIATE GOAL THERE WAS THE DIFFERENTIAL OF DON LUIS PARRA (PAPÁ) FIRST STAGE WON BY THE GÜERO ANGULO KICK

Then we crossed the hills of the lagunas,  from there to the intermediate goal that was Checkpoint 5,  previously to Don Luis Parra when he crossed at full speed through a water channel he took a strong jump, thundered all the differential and chassis of its model A, which was doubled as a drum; with a lead of 3 hours and 5 minutes, the Tecate del Güero Angulo came first.

We came second in the Halcón de la Sierra. That night we half slept in town because there was a big party in the church, at the same time the mechanics repaired the car's faults; by the way that our car lengthened the exhaust from the manifold which represented a danger due to the proximity of the carburettor with the fire, it was Dr. Cirilo Mondragón who grabbed a sheet of butter tin and immediately placed it as an escape.

UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS FOR THE AYALA DUCK

“One of the most spectacular and unforgettable moments for me was that on board a command, I had to load gasoline to the Falcon of the Sierra in full gear since we were fighting for minutes for first place; I did not care about the danger and risks, imagine I was 19 years old, I was in my youth, "he said.

The next day, very early, the start was repeated similar to the positions of La Paz, but since the model A of Luis Parra (dad) had thundered, the first to leave was the Tecate, then the Falcon of the Sierra, then another model A convertible, the Tinker Bell. We grabbed hard for next Checkpoint 6, then turned onto the dangerous slopes of mountains; We were stepping on the dust of Tecate, before reaching the fishmonger we saw that they stopped because a wooden and cotton fabric radiator was broken as they did not plan to put water on it to squeeze its segments.

EL HALCÓN DE LA SIERRA, PASSES THE TECATE BEFORE TODOS SANTOS, ALL SAINTS

At that moment we passed it immediately, - I said to my colleague, "we are already winning compadre, we are going to take care of the car, we have a good advantage". From far behind comes an A model FORD, I told the driver, "watch out for the curves and the descents in these mountains, passing Checkpoint 7, there are only some slopes like the La Muela stream and from there it was hard for Checkpoint 8 to make the road easier.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF VICTORY

When we managed to reach the town at Checkpoint 9, the two crew members of the seasoned Falcon de la Sierra met each other's faces, as we often did on trips to the north- the black chevrolet was working perfectly, the jumps were jumping evenly, its 6 cylinders roared and moved with great synchrony; the radiator as a refrigerator, the oil pressure in excellence, we never struck out, the powerful standard transmission responded to any rise or difficult terrain and its clutch worked like butter, the steering wheel or even perfect in its direction.

We immediately filled up with gasoline in town.
"We already made it compadre, don't let it go, let's go at this rate, there is no dust nearby, so hard for the goal, 5,000 pesotes of prize await us to celebrate", we commented.

THE ACCUMULATED EXPERIENCE IN THE TRANSPENINSULAR RACE

And so it was, the destination had marked our glory, the last section we practically arrived alone, we had an hour's advantage, without a doubt those long trips through the peninsula had forged a character and strength to win that race, said co-pilot Ayala.

PRIOR TO THE GOAL

In the distance we saw the first houses of La Paz, little by little we approached and more and more people were waiting for us in the gaps, they raised their hands, applauded, shouted and encouraged us, the truth was tears of emotion spilled over me and joy, I wanted to hide but I could not. With each passing second, my heart beat, and finally we saw the great canvas of the 'Meta', our goal and finish line.

We crossed the line in what is now the state government palace, there, Mr. Demetrio Garmendia Fuentes, lowered the checkered flag and we were greeted with big scandal, we stopped the car and everyone went over us, they looked at the car, they touched it and they took photos.

CELEBRATING THE WIN

Instinctively my compadre and I hugged each other laughing and celebrating the great triumph; at that time 5,000 pesos was a world of money, we gave half to the owner of the car for Narciso Cruz who had brought the car from the port of Santa Rosalía. After the awards ceremony, we held the party for several days, by the way, Captain Arturo Silva filmed a movie in his plane, which was shown weeks later in the Juárez cinema.

FAME FOR THE TERRISUREÑA CAREER

The truth was that we became famous throughout the peninsula after that historic race. Later, I became an aviator pilot. By the way, after the first Mexican-Baja Mil, I had to take our gringo customers cars back to the north, after the 1967 gringo event. I told my friend Manuel Parra that if we had participated in that race, we would surely brought the win to the competition at gringolandia!

The final results were as follows:

FIRST PLACE- 1938 Chevrolet car, number 17 ("The Falcon of the Sierra") piloted by Manuel Parra and Alberto Ayala, with a time of 6 hours, 6 minutes and 57 seconds.

SECOND PLACE- Car number 4 Buick 1932 (“Tecate”) driven by Guillermo Angulo Cota (a) El Guero and José Angulo, with a time of 7 hours, five minutes and 4 seconds.

THIRD PLACE- Car number 6 Ford model A (“El Pelón”) by Alfonso Angulo and Manuel Sedano with time of 8 hours, 44 minutes and 30 seconds.

FOURTH PLACE- Car No. 12 Ford Coupe Model A 1928 (“El Cachanía”) driven by José Ángel Peralta and Alejandro Contreras with time of 9 hours, 59 minutes and 35 seconds. The vehicle represented the port of Santa Rosalía.

FIFTH PLACE- Pick Up Ford 1928, number 9 (“La Calandria”) driven by Gregorio Pimentel and Félix Beltrán, with time of 12 hours, 56 minutes and 5 seconds. This car was representative of San José del Cabo.

Nine vehicles raced in total.""

Notice the DNF's aren't even mentioned in the history books!

Gringo (modern) racing in the Mexican 1000 started more than Ten (10) Years AFTER the real start of Baja Racing in 1955.
