Glenn Hoddle reacts to Man Utd’s appointment of Jose Mourinho

Glenn Hoddle has backed Manchester United’s decision to appoint Jose Mourinho as their new manager.

The Portuguese coach was unveiled as the club’s new boss on Friday morning after days of speculation linking him with the Old Trafford job.

Mourinho had been looking for a new job after his sacking by Chelsea back in December.

United’s decision to appoint Mourinho came just days after they sacked Louis van Gaal two days after the Dutchman led them to FA Cup glory.

However, former England boss Hoddle feels that the time was right for a change and is backing Mourinho to bring success to Old Trafford.

Writing in his column for the Daily Mail, Hoddle said: “As for Mourinho’s appointment, timing is everything in football.

“Three years ago, this wouldn’t have happened because it wasn’t the style of football Manchester United wanted.

“But they have won one FA Cup in three years. If they want to be in with a shout of winning the Premier League and Champions League, they needed a change.

“For most managers, that could take a long time, but United will hope Mourinho is a shortcut to that.

“He has the power now to go and buy, and mould a team together.”

Attentions will now inevitably turn towards the summer transfer window and Mourinho’s plans to strengthen his squad at Old Trafford ahead of his first full season in charge.
