Gary Neville sends warning to Man United about signing Declan Rice

Gary Neville has admitted that he is unsure whether Manchester United should go all out to sign West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice.

The England international has been regularly linked with a move to Manchester United over the past 12 months following his emergence as one of West Ham’s best players under Manuel Pellegrini.

Rice’s standout performances in the middle of the park have even earned the 20-year-old a respectable five caps under England head coach Gareth Southgate.

The former Republic of Ireland international has netted two goals in 174 appearances for West Ham since breaking into the east London outfit’s first-team.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made a point of recruiting young English talent in the summer transfer window, serving to fuel speculation that Rice could be a target for the Manchester United boss.

However, former Red Devils defender Neville is still unsure whether Manchester United should break the bank to sign the promising West Ham midfielder.

“I don’t know. I mean, you talk about £80m, £90m to get him out of West Ham,” Neville told Monday Night Football on Sky Sports when asked about a potential Man United move for Rice.

“We’ve seen a bid for Wilfried Zaha from Everton for £70m odd [which was rejected]. To get players out of the likes of West Ham now, Crystal Palace, it’s not going to be easy, so it’s going to cost a fortune.

“Would I say yes now at £80m or £90m? I’m not feeling that personally at this moment in time. But am I seeing a really good player who could potentially develop into something fantastic for the next 10 years? Yes, I really do think that.

“But would I go and spend that much money on a player [on potential]? Do Manchester United need another player [like that]? They’ve already got Nemanja Matic, they’ve already got Scott McTominay, who are doing a similar role to what I see Rice doing.”

Manchester United signed Wales international Daniel James, Crystal Palace full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Leicester City centre-half Harry Maguire in the summer.

The Red Devils were 1-0 winners against Leicester at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon to hoist themselves into fourth place in the Premier League table.

Manchester United will take on Rice and West Ham in their next Premier League fixture on Sunday.
