BT Sport pundit criticises ‘disrespectful’ Chelsea FC midfielder

Eidur Gudjohnsen has hit out at Ross Barkley for his decision to take a penalty in Chelsea FC’s 1-0 loss to Valencia in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

With the Blues trailing 1-0 late on after Rodrigo’s opener, the referee awarded the home side a spot kick and the chance to level the tie.

The England midfielder decided to take the penalty despite the Blues also having Jorginho and Willian on the pitch.

Barkley then smashed his penalty onto the bar as the west London side slumped to a disappointing defeat in front of their home fans.

Speaking to BT Sport after the game, former Chelsea FC striker Gudjohnsen was clearly not particularly impressed by what he saw from Barkley.

The former forward said: “It’s almost disrespectful to your team-mates to do something like what Ross Barkley did this evening.

“I’m pretty sure it’s clear who is the penalty taker before the game.

“Just to create all the fuss, the tension between your team-mates and yourself and then go on to miss the penalty, you just put yourself under so much more pressure than actually just taking a penalty.”

Chelsea FC will now dust themselves down as they prepare for their home clash against Liverpool FC at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The Blues are aiming to make it back to back wins in the Premier League for the first time this season after they were 5-2 winners at Wolves last time out.

Chelsea FC are currently in sixth place in the Premier League table heading into the game.
