Phil Neville believes that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have to lead Manchester United to a top-four finish and win a trophy to get the manager’s job on a permanent basis.

The Norwegian has rightly been earning lots of praise for the impact he has had at Old Trafford since taking over on an interim basis following the sacking of Jose Mourinho back in December.

Manchester United booked their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals with a 2-0 win over Chelsea FC on Monday night and they are also back up into fourth place in the Premier League table.

The Red Devils have only suffered one defeat under Solskjaer so far, when they lost 2-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last week.

Despite Solskjaer clearly putting himself in the frame to get the job on a permanent basis, Neville feels that the Norwegian still has work to do to secure the gig.

Speaking to BBC Sport on Monday night, Neville said: “The next six days for Ole and United, you’ve got Liverpool on Sunday.

“I think the Liverpool game is a bigger one for Ole than the one tonight [against Chelsea].

“But for him to get the job he’s got to win a trophy, he’s got to get in the top four.

“So the next six days is pivotal.”

Next up for Manchester United is their Premier League clash against Liverpool FC at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils will take on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup quarter-finals after the draw was made on Monday night.
