Paul Merson states his prediction for Chelsea FC v Southampton

Paul Merson is backing Chelsea FC to ease to a 3-0 win against Southampton at St Mary’s on Wednesday evening.

The Blues have bounced back from 1-0 loss to Leicester City at Stamford Bridge with successive Premier League victories.

Chelsea FC managed to beat their London rivals Watford and Crystal Palace in their last two Premier League outings.

Maurizio Sarri’s side are in fourth place in the Premier League table and five points ahead of Arsenal, who lead the chasing pack.

Chelsea FC will face a Southampton side that lost 3-1 to defending Premier League champions Manchester City last Sunday.

The Saints initially recorded a 3-2 win over Arsenal at St Mary’s following Ralph Hasenhuttl’s appointment as Mark Hughes’ replacement.

Chelsea FC have won their last six games against Southampton in the Premier League and the FA Cup.

Indeed, Sarri’s side were 3-0 winners against Southampton at St Mary’s back in October thanks to goals from Eden Hazard, Ross Barkley and Alvaro Morata on the south coast.

Former Arsenal midfielder Merson believes Chelsea FC will ease to a 3-0 win against Southampton at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

“I thought Southampton did well at times against Manchester City to get back into the game, but it could have been eight before that,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“There’s a reality check at Southampton. There’s not too many players in their team who would get in other teams. They’re in a relegation battle. They had the new manager syndrome, beat Arsenal and Huddersfield – but since then it’s not been good.”

Merson added: “Watching Chelsea against Palace, there was no rush, no panic, no urgency, but it was a good result because Palace isn’t the easiest place to go. Watching United and Liverpool at the moment though, winning 1-0 doesn’t look that good, even when it is. I think they’ll probably go for Callum Wilson in January, but Bournemouth’s squad is so shallow at the moment that it’d be difficult to let him go.”

Chelsea FC finished in fifth spot in the Premier League table last season to result in Antonio Conte’s exit at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are on course to secure a return to the top four this term.
