Gary Neville praised Xherdan Shaqiri’s “instant impact” after the Swiss star fired Liverpool FC to a 3-1 win against Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday evening.
Liverpool FC broke the deadlock in the first half thanks to Sadio Mane’s superb finish after Fabinho picked out the Senegal international with a brilliant pass.
Alisson Becker, who had kept 10 clean sheets ahead of the visit of Manchester United, made an uncharacteristic handling error to allow Jesse Lingard to level before half-time.
Jurgen Klopp turned to Shaqiri with Manchester United threatening to frustrate Liverpool FC at Anfield once again.
The Switzerland restored Liverpool FC’s lead with a deflected strike that crept past David De Gea to help the Merseyside outfit preserve their unbeaten start to the season.
The summer signing extended the home side’s lead with his second goal after Shaqiri’s strike was deflected past De Gea with 10 minutes left to play at Anfield.
Former Manchester United defender Neville singled out Shaqiri for praise after his quick-fire goals.
“Ander Herrera gets caught one on one with Sadio Mane, he dives in and doesn’t want to go back into his own box,” Neville told Sky Sports on Sunday.
“He [Herrera] jumps at it and takes a massive chance. There were deflections everywhere and it gave Shaqiri the goal. Instant impact from Xherdan Shaqiri, no chance for the goalkeeper.”
On Shaqiri’s second goal, Neville added: “Where others had been shooting at the edge of the box, Shaqiri just slows it down and composes himself.
“He plays a lovely little pass and gets the return. It deflects past De Gea, who has absolutely no chance again. Shaqiri has shown quality and he has got quality.”
Shaqiri has netted five goals in 13 games in the Premier League this season to leave his mark on Klopp’s team.
Manchester United have conceded 28 goals in 17 games in the Premier League last term, which is more goals than De Gea let in throughout the 2017-18 season.
