Maurizio Sarri replies when asked if Chelsea FC can win the title

Maurizio Sarri hasn’t ruled out Chelsea FC pushing Manchester City all the way in the title race this season, but the Blues manager underlined their primary target is to finish closer to the defending champions.

Chelsea FC finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last term to miss out on a Champions League spot after the west London side ended up 30 points adrift of reigning champions Manchester City.

The Blues opted to appoint the former Napoli manager as Antonio Conte’s replacement in the summer in an attempt to close the deficit between themselves and the Citizens.

Sarri has been a surprise package in the Premier League so far after steering the west London side to eight victories and three draws in their opening 11 games.

The Italian head coach has managed to secure three points against Arsenal after a 3-2 win over their London rivals at Stamford Bridge in their second game of the season, while holding Liverpool FC to a 1-1 draw in the English capital last month.

Chelsea FC came from 2-1 down to rescue a 2-2 draw with Manchester United to protect their unbeaten start after Ross Barkley’s last-gasp equaliser at Stamford Bridge.

However, the Blues remain four points adrift of the runaway leaders to leave Sarri’s men with some work to do to overhaul the defending champions in the title race.

Chelsea FC were 3-1 winners against Crystal Palace at the weekend thanks to goals from Alvaro Morata and Pedro Rodriguez.

Asked during his post-match media conference whether Chelsea FC can challenge Manchester City in the title race, Sarri said:

“I don’t know. At the beginning we knew there was a gap of 30 points from last season. At the moment we need only to think about trying to recover a large part of the gap.

“I hope to recover almost all of it but I don’t know. It’s difficult to recover 30 points but we are trying.”

Chelsea FC will take on BATE Borisov in Belarus on Thursday night after a 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge last month thanks to Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s hat-trick in west London.

The Blues are the only top-six Premier League team to remain unbeaten in all competitions this term.
