Juan Mata sends message to Man United supporters after comeback win

Juan Mata has credited the Manchester United supporters with their role in Saturday’s dramatic 3-2 win over Newcastle United at Old Trafford.

The Spain international was named on the bench for the visit of the Magpies but Jose Mourinho called upon Mata to replace Eric Bailly after Newcastle scored twice in the opening 10 minutes.

Mata started Manchester United’s comeback with his eighth direct free-kick since his move to the Premier League to offer the home side hope of a comeback with 20 minutes to play.

France international Anthony Martial equalised in the 76th minute to level the Premier League clash before January signing Alexis Sanchez netted a winner in the 90th minute.

Manchester United’s dramatic 3-2 win against Newcastle at the weekend secured the Red Devils’ first win since a 2-1 victory over Watford on Saturday 15 September.

The Red Devils supporters at Old Trafford gave Mourinho’s side a rousing reception at the final whistle after Manchester United showed character and fight at Old Trafford.

Writing in his personal blog, One Hour Behind, Mata reflected on an important win for Manchester United, crediting the role of the club’s home supporters at Old Trafford.

“Thanks to all of this and the incredible support of our fans, of course, we were pushed towards the three points,” Mata wrote.

“The energy and lift that the fans gave us was key to taking the win.

“In the dying minutes, above all, Old Trafford transformed into the kind of stadium that every other one in the world wants to be – a stadium where goals can be scored from the stands too.

“It was really amazing to be able to feel that from the pitch itself. In those moments, you realise just how special our fans are. You all deserved the result from that game.”

Manchester United are in eighth place in the Premier League table and seven points behind leaders Manchester City, Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC in the title race.

The Red Devils will have the opportunity to make up significant ground on their title rivals Chelsea FC after the international break when the Blues will welcome their former manager to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have a good record against Manchester United in west London over the past few seasons, racking up three successive victories over Mourinho’s men at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea FC will be sure to test Manchester United’s ragged defence after scoring eight goals in their last three games in all competitions.
