Martin Keown has suggested Alexandre Lacazette’s attitude has been ‘impeccable’ after he scored the winning goal in Arsenal’s 3-2 win over Cardiff last weekend.
Lacazette started and was lively all game, fully deserving his goal, which will come as a relief after a tough first season at Arsenal.
Keown singled him out for praise after his poor start to life in North London, missing out on France’s World Cup victory, and starting Arsenal’s first three games of the season on the bench.
He said in his Daily Mail column: “I think special mention has to go to Alexandre Lacazette.
“How patient has that man been? His attitude has been impeccable.
“He failed to make the French squad for the World Cup then watched from afar as they went on to lift the trophy in Russia.
“Emery used him as a substitute in his first three Premier League matches, then he finally gets to start against Cardiff.
“So, what does he do? He goes and scores the winner.
“Lacazette now has to play and be the person they build around. Full credit to him.”
Lacazette was one of the most sought-after properties in world football during his time at Lyon, where he scored 129 goals in 275 appearances.
He finally settled on a move to Arsenal, and whilst he managed 14 league goals in his opening season with the Gunners, his reputation was seriously harmed as his team failed.
He missed out on the France squad for the summers’ World Cup in Russia, which saw Les Bleus take home a second World Cup crown.
After coming off the bench in Arsenal’s first three games this season under new boss Unai Emery, Lacazette finally started in the win over Cardiff.
Goals from Shkodran Mustafi and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang saw Arsenal begin to fire at the level they would hope to.
Cardiff twice restored parity, but Lacazette’s most symbolic goal so far in an Arsenal shirt, took the spoils back to London.
