Arsene Wenger replies when asked about reported Arsenal target

Arsene Wenger has described Aleksandr Golovin as a “strong player” amid reports linking the CSKA Moscow star with a move to Arsenal.

The Gunners have been linked with a potential switch to sign the playmaker at the end of the season following his impressive performances at Cska Moscow.

Golovin has been a regular in the Russian team over the past few seasons despite his relative inexperience.

The 21-year-old scored a brilliant free-kick in CSKA Moscow’s 4-1 loss to Arsenal in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final last week.

The Russia international has scored 11 times in 107 games in all competitions since breaking into the CSKA Moscow first-team.

He has also netted twice in 17 games for the Russian national team and is expected to feature at the 2018 World Cup on home soil.

Speaking to the media about Golovin ahead of Arsenal’s clash against CSKA Moscow in Russia on Thursday night, Wenger said:

“His performances are very good and he is a regular player in the Russian team so that means he is a very strong player.

“In fact if you look at CSKA they have two regular players in midfield who play for Russia so they have the best midfield in the country. Certainly in Russia.”

Arsenal need to win the Europa League to secure a place in next season’s Champions League given the Gunners are 13 points behind Liverpool FC and Tottenham Hotspur with eight games to play.

The Gunners beat AC Milan in the round of 16 to reach the Europa League quarter-final.
