Jurgen Klopp reacts to Danny Ings’ display in Liverpool FC’s draw with Everton

Jurgen Klopp has admitted that Danny Ings still has some work to do to hit top form for Liverpool FC after he started the Reds’ goalless draw with Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday.

The striker has been hampered by fitness issues during his spell at Liverpool FC but he will be hoping to hold down more of a regular first-team spot at Anfield in the coming weeks and months.

Saturday’s derby clash marked the 25-year-old’s first Premier League start of the season as Klopp opted to deploy Ings up front along with summer signing Dom Solanke.

Ings featured for 89 minutes at Goodison Park as the Reds played out a goalless draw with their bitter local rivals.

And although Klopp admitted that Ings still has some work to do to hit top form, he was pleased to be able to call on the striker for Saturday’s game.

Speaking at his post-match news conference, Klopp said: “It’s easy to judge it, it was not Danny Ings’ best game… that was the most importantly physical, the highest level he could play for ages and together with Dom [Solanke], they didn’t play together often so it’s not that they know exactly ‘when I go left, you go right’ or whatever, that’s all difficult.

“We spoke of course about it but is it then settled? Of course not. I am completely happy. The job was to work hard and enjoy the game, really, and then get a result and they were like this.

“Ingsy maybe started the emotional period of the game with a little [Seamus] Coleman discussion and then OK, let’s go for the last few minutes. So all OK, he came through good [and] I am fine with that.”

Liverpool FC now switch their attentions back towards Champions League affairs and the crunch clash against Manchester City at The Etihad in the return leg of their quarter-final tie.

The Reds secured a dominant 3-0 win over the Citizens in the first leg at Anfield last week.
