Wayne Rooney is confident Chelsea FC will still secure a top-four place despite a disappointing start to 2018.

The Blues slumped to a shock 4-1 loss to London rivals Watford at Vicarage Road on Monday night to cast doubt over their top-four challenge.

Chelsea FC have lost their last two Premier League games following a 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge at the end of January.

The west London side have only managed to win of their last five top-flight games to leave Chelsea FC a mere point ahead of fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

The defending champions will welcome the Premier League’s basement club West Brom to Stamford Bridge next Monday before a trip to Manchester United after the international break.

Chelsea FC have the small matter of a Champions League last-16 tie against La Liga leaders Barcelona to distract them from Premier League affairs later this month.

Former Manchester United striker Rooney, who sealed a return to Everton last summer, is still backing Chelsea FC to secure a Champions League spot despite their poor run of form.

“I think Chelsea are a great team,” Rooney told Sky Sports.

“I think they will make the top four definitely.

“I think obviously there seems to be a few issues with [Antonio] Conte but I’m sure they’ll get sorted out and they’ve got enough quality there to finish in the top four.”

Chelsea FC signed Everton midfielder Ross Barkley, AS Roma defender Emerson Palmieri and Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud in the January transfer window.
