Gary Neville admits Emre Can’s rumoured agreement with Juventus is a big blow to Liverpool FC.
The Germany international has entered the final six months of his current deal at the Merseyside club and the versatile midfielder hasn’t signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool FC.
Indeed, Serie A champions Juventus have been linked with a move to sign the former Bayern Munich midfielder regularly over the past 12 months or so, despite Can being a key part of Jurgen Klopp’s team.
Under the German coach, the 23-year-old has secured a regular starting spot in midfield alongside Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum to produce some of his best performances at Anfield.
Can helped Liverpool FC to become the first team to beat Premier League leaders Manchester City this season following their dramatic 4-3 victory over Pep Guardiola’s side at Anfield on Sunday.
Former Manchester United defender Neville believes Can’s exit would be a huge blow to Liverpool FC given the authority that he brings to Klopp’s team.
“The news about Can leaving, for me, I think he’s a fantastic player, with personality and character. I think he brings a lot to this Liverpool team in terms of character,” Neville told his Sky Sports podcast.
“That three in midfield and the three up front were brilliant in the first half. They set the tone for how you could play against Man City if you’ve got that energy and ability to know how to press.
“It’s a Big Blow for Liverpool. It won’t make the headlines that (Philippe) Coutinho’s sale made. Juventus are a clever club, they sign intelligent players who are shrewd and know the game. I know there’s a mixed reception on Merseyside to Can in terms of how good he is, and I’ve even had debates with Jamie Carragher.
“He looks like he has authority on the pitch, and there aren’t many of those characters around in the game.”
Liverpool FC are in third place in the Premier League table and level on points with top-four rivals Chelsea.
The Reds will take on Portuguese giants FC Porto in the Champions League last 16 next month.
