Ray Wilkins ‘flabbergasted’ Chelsea signed 23-year-old

Ray Wilkins has admitted that he hasn’t been impressed with Chelsea summer signing Tiemoue Bakayoko.

The defending Premier League champions signed Bakayoko in a £40m deal from Ligue 1 title holders AS Monaco in the summer.

Bakayoko was a key part of the Monaco team that beat Paris Saint-Germain to the title and reached the Champions League semi-finals.

Chelsea made the surprise decision to sanction the sale of Nemanja Matic to title rivals Manchester United in a £40m transfer despite strengthening the Red Devils.

Bakayoko started the season with a knee problem but made his Premier League debut in a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley.

The 23-year-old has scored two goals in 15 appearances in the Premier League in the 2017-18 season so far.

However, the defensive midfielder has struggle to find consistency in Antonio Conte’s team.

Former Chelsea assistant manager Wilkins isn’t impressed with Bakayoko and the west London side’s decision to sell Matic.

“When Chelsea did that swap for Bakayoko and Matic, I was flabbergasted,” Wilkins told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“Bring in Bakayoko for £40m but keep Matic. Let him be his understudy.

“I didn’t see the £34m differential with Chabolah. I don’t think Bakayoko has been very good.”

Chelsea will take on bitter London rivals Arsenal in the League Cup semi-final next month following a 2-1 win against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge mid-week.
