Phil Neville has warned Jose Mourinho that his remit is to lead Manchester United to their first Premier League title since 2013.

The Red Devils appointed the serial winner as their new manager in May 2016 following a disappointing fifth-placed finish under Louis van Gaal in 2015-16.

Mourinho has spent over £300m on new signings since taking over the reins of the 20-time English champions 18 months ago.

Manchester United finished in sixth spot last term but the Red Devils won the Europa League and the League Cup in his first season at Old Trafford.

Mourinho’s side made a brilliant start to the 2017-18 season following six victories and one draw in their opening seven Premier League games.

Manchester United have since lost to Chelsea, Huddersfield Town and Manchester City, as well as stalemates with Liverpool FC and Stoke City, to fall 11 points behind the leaders.

The Red Devils haven’t tasted Premier League title glory since 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson steered Manchester United to their 13th top-flight crown in 27 years under his management.

Retired defender Neville warned Mourinho that nothing less than the Premier League title will satisfy the Red Devils supporters.

“Man United need to win the Premier League,” Neville told The Debate on Sky Sports on Thursday night.

“It doesn’t matter what style you use. If Man United win the Premier League, the fans won’t care one bit. It takes time to develop style. Mourinho is building a team.”

Manchester United haven’t won the Champions League crown since 2008 and will take on La Liga side Sevilla in the last 16.
