Arsene Wenger has explained his decision to drop Alexandre Lacazette for Arsenal’s 3-1 loss to Manchester City earlier this month.

The Gunners Signed Lacazette in a £52m deal from Ligue 1 side Lyon in a club-record transfer in the summer transfer window.

The 26-year-old scored six times in five Premier League games at The Emirates but Wenger has used the prolific striker sparingly on the road.

Lacazette scored his first goal in an away fixture during Arsenal’s 5-2 win against Everton at Goodison Park last month.

However, the Arsenal boss opted to start want-away Alexis Sanchez at The Etihad despite the Chile international’s continued link to Manchester City.

Wenger turned to Lacazette with Arsenal trailing 2-0 and the summer signing halved the deficit before Gabriel Jesus restored the leaders’ two-goal cushion.

Asked about his decision to drop the France striker during his pre-match media conference ahead of the north London derby on Saturday, Wenger said:

“I have a big choice to make every time, decisions to make up front. He has played many games. He did not play away from home at City, that’s the only one, and overall I trust him.”

Arsenal dropped to sixth place in the Premier League Table and 12 points behind current leaders Manchester City.

The Gunners signed Lacazette and Bosnian defender Sead Kolasinac in a free transfer from Schalke 04 in the summer.

The north London side finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last term.
