Robert Pires sends bleak message to Arsenal about transfers

Robert Pires insists Arsenal didn’t invest enough money in new players in the summer transfer window to challenge for the Premier League title.

The Gunners signed Alexandre Lacazette in a £52m deal from Ligue 1 side Lyon in July to eclipse the fee that Arsenal paid for Mesut Ozil in 2013.

Arsenal snapped up Bosnia-Herzegovina international Sead Kolasinac in a free transfer from Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04.

The north London side lost 2-1 to Watford in the Premier League at Vicarage Road last weekend after goals from Troy Deeney and Tom Cleverley cancelled out Per Mertesacker’s opener.

Arsenal have already lost three games in the Premier League this season to leave Arsene Wenger’s side nine points adrift of current leaders Manchester City.

Former Arsenal midfielder Pires is disillusioned with the lack of summer signings at The Emirates given the Gunners’ fifth-place finish in the Premier League last term.

“They only spent money on Alexandre Lacazette. That’s not enough to compete for the top spots,” Pires told SportBild.

Wenger signed a new deal in the summer after Arsenal were 2-1 winners against Premier League champions Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

The Gunners boss will be hoping to lead Arsenal to a top-four finish or Europa League glory to secure a return to the Champions League.
